Delegates representing the Largo and Lanham area were able to secure funding for a number of local projects during the 2008 legislative session, which adjourned April 7.

Del. Justin Ross (D-Dist. 22) of Greenbelt sponsored a bill to bring home $250,000 in funding for the Lanham Boys and Girls Club in House Bill 681.

The bill, co-sponsored by Del. Tawanna Gaines (D-Dist. 22) of Berwyn Heights and Del. Anne Healey (D-Dist. 22) of Hyattsville, will provide the recreational organization with the necessary funds to upgrade the quality of several playing fields and install a computer learning center at their site, Ross said.

The club’s offices are located at 4325 Forbes Boulevard in Lanham.

‘‘The end result is that the amenities for the Boys and Girls Club are going to be a lot better and we’re going to have more kids be able to do more activities,” Ross said of the bill.

Finding funding was difficult in this year’s budget, he said.

‘‘It was a tight budget year, but we fought very hard and were successful in negotiating support for this local project,” Ross said. ‘‘The Lanham Boys and Girls Club does such a good job for so many people, it was a fight that we were fully engaged in.”

President of the Lanham Boys and Girls Club, Kevin Snowden, was not available for comment.

Del. Aisha Braveboy (D-Dist. 25) of Mitchellville secured funding for two projects during the legislative session.

One House bill she sponsored provides up to $100,000 for the planning, design and construction of the Aquaculture and Seafood Retail and Distribution Market in Suitland.

The bill authorizes a grant to the Board of Directors of the Economic Development and Training Institute Inc., a community development corporation that will coordinate the planning, design and construction of the facility.

Braveboy said the facility will assist with the training of youths who wish to learn how to become commercial fishermen and serve as a processing plant and retail market.

Braveboy’s other bill authorizes up to $200,000 in state funding for the District Heights Commercial Area Façade Restoration and Infrastructure Improvement program.

According to the City of District Heights’ Web site, the program consists of a strategy to ‘‘visually restore and improve the physical image of the entire Marlboro Pike Commercial Corridor within the corporate limits of the City of District Heights.”

Braveboy said the bill provides funding for the planning, design, construction and repair of facilities associated with the improvements.

Del. Gerron Levi (D-Dist. 23A) of Woodmore, in tandem with Del. James Hubbard (D-Dist. 23A) of Bowie and Del. Marvin Holmes (D-Dist. 23B) of Kettering, sponsored six bond bills designed to provide repairs and improvements to several churches and clubs in the Bowie area.

Some of the churches and clubs the three secured funding for include the Bowie Lions Club, Cornerstone Assembly of God, the Pointer Ridge Swim and Racquet Club and the Belair Swim Club.

‘‘These are all important projects for public purposes,” Levi said.
