Students donate computers to Silver Spring nonprofitGapBuster Learning Center, a Silver Spring non-profit organization, received six Dell Pentium IV computer systems and two printers as part of a donation from The Montgomery County Students Information Technology Foundation, Inc. Network Operations students, who recently held a Computer Lab Gifting Ceremony at Rockville High School. The computers were prepared for donation by students. The MCSITF is a non-profit organization established cooperatively by the Montgomery County business and professional community and the Montgomery County Public Schools. MCSITF programs are located at Clarksburg, Rockville and Thomas Edison high schools. The students host three used computer sales per year. The final computer sale will occur 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. May 10 at Thomas Edison High School of Technology, 12501 Dalewood Drive, Silver Spring. Proceeds benefit the ITF programs. The SkillsUSA Championships reward students for excellence, involve industry in directly evaluating student performance, and focus training relevant to employers’ needs, according to a news release from Edison. Team members Chris Feldman and Juan Melendez captured the gold medal in Web Design and Jeffrey Domingo won the gold in the Basic Health Care Skills category. The Edison first-place winners will compete at the National SkillsUSA Competition in Kansas City, Mo., during the week of June 23 - 27, 2008. Forty-four students from Edison competed. In addition to the three first-place winners, 12 Edison students placed second or third. Second place individual winners: Max Findling, Carpentry; Jennifer Betancus, Nail Care; and Danny Diaz, Technical Computer Application. Second place team competition winners: Chris Lastre, Danny Most and Atethaan Sonekeo in Community Service, and Ashley Cherie Gonzales and Mike Poghikyan in the Promotional Bulletin Board competition. Third place winners: Amy Grubic, Basic Health Care Skills; Ceili Geiger, Food and Beverage Service; Ruben Munoz, Job Interview; and Chelsea Maggi, Nail Care. The national competition brings together more than 4,500 students for more than 70 skills championships. International Nightreturns to Wheaton Wheaton High School will hold its annual International Night May 9, beginning with a 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. dinner followed by a show of dancers, singers and musicians. Foods and the new Wheaton High School International cookbook will be sold. Proceeds from the show and the cookbook are donated for scholarships. Springbrook bandwins awards The Springbrook High School Jazz Band, Symphonic Band and String Orchestra won second-place awards in the Festival of Music Competition April 4 at Harper College outside of Chicago. The bands also won Most Outstanding Saxophone section. In addition, Braxton Cook won Most Outstanding Soloist for a jazz band, according to a news release from Springbrook. The entire Springbrook group won the Esprit de Corps Award, given to the group that displays outstanding behavior and conduct on and off the stage throughout the festival performance. The director, Wyman Jones, was inducted into the Festival of Music Director’s Hall of Fame for participating in the past five Festivals of Music competitions. Springbrook teacherselected for fellowship Kera Johnson, a member of the math department at Springbrook High School, was selected to receive a 2008-2009 Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship appointment with the National Science Foundation’s Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings, according to a news release from Springbrook. She will be working at the NSF offices in Arlington, Va., from September 2008 to July 2009. The Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship Act was signed into law in November 1994. Selected teachers spend up to one year in a congressional office or a federal agency. Blake company to perform Shakespeare celebration The James Hubert Blake High School Shakespeare Stage Company will give a 25-minute performance at the Folger Shakespeare Library Shakespeare’s Birthday Celebration on April 27. The Blake Company will perform between 1 and 2 p.m. The Folger Shakespeare Library, 201 East Capitol St., SE, Washington, D.C., contains the largest collection of Shakespeare materials and is a world-class research center on Shakespeare. Grace Episcopal pupils place at Maryland History Day Grace Episcopal Day School students Eva Branson, Brittani Campbell, Dorothy Hastings and Erin Monahan won top honors at the 8th annual Maryland History Day Competition March 15 at Julius West Middle School in Rockville. Eleven members of Reginald Will’s sixth-grade class at Grace participated in this year’s event, according to a news release from the school. The winning students wrote and performed a short play, ‘‘You’ve Got to Get an Education: Integration of the Montgomery County Schools,” based loosely on the lives of Nina Clarke and former Congresswoman Connie Morella, two women involved in the integration of the county’s public school system. ‘‘You’ve Got to Get an Education” earned three individual awards: The Charles Jacobs Special Prize for Local History, The Expression of African-American History Prize and the African-American Educational Prize. Other Grace students involved in National History Day included Isel Fitzgerald, Isaiah Marshall, Rachel Sandri, Clare Specht and Alexa Thomas. These sixth-grade students worked on a play ‘‘Breaking through the Gender Wall: Title IX,” which brought to stage the early life of Jane Sanders, who is now the President of Burlington College in Vermont. The play discussed gender discrimination and the struggles of a young girl competing against boys during her early school years. Kenny Lawson and James Mitchel created, ‘‘A Nation Divided Cannot Stand” a short film based on an interview they conducted with a former Grace parent, Rubina Patel. The film discussed Patel’s childhood growing up in Pakistan and the conflicts between India and Pakistan. Student named Presidential Scholars candidate Silver Spring resident Martin McDonald, a student at Choate Rosemary Hall in Connecticut, was named one of 2,600 candidates for the 2008 Presidential Scholars Program, according to a news release from Choate. The candidates were selected from nearly 2.8 million students expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in 2008. Takoma Park MS students to receive tech awards The MCPS Division of Career and Technology Education has selected two outstanding Takoma Park Middle School students to receive awards. James Shepherdson will receive the 2008 Computer Science Outstanding Middle School Student Award and Shoareged Phillpotts will receive the 2008 Family and Consumer Science Outstanding Middle School Student Award. These students were nominated by their teachers for their outstanding work, according to a news release from Takoma Park Middle School. Blair studentsto walk for Darfur A group of students from Montgomery Blair High School are hosting a charity walk⁄run to raise awareness about the continuing genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan 9:30 a.m. April 26.
