Cranes carry good wishes to Japan
According to legend, anyone who folds 1,000 paper cranes will be granted a wish by a crane.
Students at Friends Meeting School in Ijamsville spent two afternoons last week folding origami paper cranes to lend their support to the people of Japan.
The groups Students Rebuild and DoSomething.org are trying to collect 100,000 origami cranes from young people around the world to represent 100 wishes of support and healing for Japan.
Cranes are considered sacred creatures in Japanese culture.
The Friends school students folded more than 1,680 cranes. While they folded, crane calls and music were playing. Younger students worked beside older students and family members.
Completed cranes were counted and poured into larger boxes for shipping to Students Rebuild. Each crane will trigger a donation of $2 from the Bezos Family Foundation to Architecture for Humanity's reconstruction efforts in Japan.
Once the goal of 100,000 origami submissions is reached, the paper cranes will be woven into an art installation, a symbolic gift from students around the globe to Japanese youth.
