‘Supermom’ balances PTA, sports, family

Myersville homemaker Diane Evich does not just drive her three sons to football practice – she helps run the league they play on. And she does not just volunteer at their school – she helps run its PTA.

Evich says she loves to be able to help her children and her beloved hometown at the same time.

‘‘Basically a lot of it has to do with my children,” she said. ‘‘I just wanted to be a part of helping them out and helping the community out, and because I’m a stay-at-home mom, I can do that.”

Evich is secretary of the Middletown Valley Athletic Association, the league in which her children play football and other sports. Her husband, Tom, is director of the association’s football program. She also serves as first vice president of the Myersville Elementary School PTA.

‘‘I pretty much try to help out wherever I can,” she said. ‘‘Like my husband says, I have a hard time saying ‘no.’”

Diane Evich, 39, has lived in Myersville her whole life – she attended Myersville Elementary and met her husband at Camp Greentop while they were in middle school. Both graduated from Middletown High in 1986; they married in 1992. She harbors a deep love for the community that raised her, and likes to talk about it.

‘‘I’m just very passionate about this area. It means a lot to me and my husband,” she said. ‘‘We’re a Christian family and our values run real deep. We have a strong family net here in the area. It’s just a really good place to raise your children.”

Evich has not always been so involved in the community, but her husband says she has always been a generous, caring person.

‘‘It’s her nature, but I think I might have ended up being an influence in some ways. I’ve been coaching football since before we had kids. Once the kids came along and got to school, that’s when she started getting involved in things at the school and things like that,” he said. ‘‘She’s just a very generous person and very upbeat and she’s a great mom for my kids and a great wife for me.”

The Evich children - 12-year-old Philip, 10-year-old John, and 8-year-old Matthew - form the centerpiece of their family’s life. Philip and John play lacrosse, Matthew plays baseball, and all three inherited their dad’s love for football and play the sport in the MVAA league.

Diane says the most important thing in her life right now is being with her family. She likes to be with them just hanging out at home, doing work outdoors, camping, skiing and generally having fun.

‘‘They’re a very close-knit family,” Diane’s 38-year-old sister, Wanda, said. ‘‘Her family means everything to her.”

Diane says her strong family values come mostly as a result of her upbringing and her religion. She attends St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hagerstown.

‘‘My mom instilled church in my life, growing up as a child, and those strong values of going to church and holding onto the American dream and being true to yourself and not being fake. Basically, just being an honest person,” she said.
