City makes waves with pool upgrades at Laurel Municipal, Greenview Drive locations
Renovations including tile repair should be done by May
Work crews will begin renovations at the City of Laurel's two public swimming facilities sometime next week, Parks and Recreation Director Michael Lhotsky said Tuesday.
Lhotsky said two of the four pools at the Laurel Municipal Swimming Pool facility and the two pools at the Greenview Drive Pool Complex will get a new base coating. The cabana at the Greenview Drive facility will also be repaired, he said.
The cost for the projects will total about $120,000, and funds will come from the city's capital improvement program, the program open space fund and the adequate public facilities escrow. The projects were approved by the City Council at its March 8 meeting.
In addition to the resurfacing, tile and ladder repair will also take place at both facilities. The cabana work will include expanding the facility's meeting rooms and replacing the deck on the back side of the complex.
Lhotsky said the city has not received any complaints about the facilities or their condition, but the work is still necessary to keep the pools up to date for visitors and swimmers.
"It's just the general maintenance program that we have for all our pools," he said. "[It's] time to do some upgrades to them."
Lhotsky said crews aim to complete the work by the end of April well before the pools open Memorial Day weekend.
