Privates surge in second half
Rice, Hawkins lead way to victory in annual girls basketball all-star game
The Washington D.C.-Metropolitan private schools girls' basketball team broke the game open in the second half, defeating the Prince George's County public schools team, 75-57, in the annual all-star game Friday night at the Novak Field House at Prince George's Community College.
The private schools trailed, 34-32, at the half, but outscored the public schools, 45-23, in the second half to cruise to the victory.
Charles H. Flowers coach Patrice Frazier-Watson, who guided the public schools, said her team just couldn't make a shot in the second half.
"We were right there in the first half, but just couldn't finish anything in the second half," she said. "We missed some open shots and some layups and didn't do the fundamentals well."
Bowie High's Robin Keke and Flowers' Nikia Gorham each had 10 points to lead the public team. Oxon Hill's Erica Vincent chipped in seven, while Flowers' Brittney Waters and Bladensburg's Ucheci Ahaiwe both added six.
The public school squad was missing three players: Surrattsville's Endia Hill, Gwynn Park's Kristin Mobley and Central's Marketa Salley were all on college visits.
National Christian Academy's Vanessa Rice led the private schools with 14 points. Riverdale Baptist's Tianna Hawkins was next with 13, while her teammate Candace Bond added 11.
Private schools coach Robert Surratt, who was the coach at Bishop McNamara before stepping down at the conclusion of the season, said he told his players to have fun during their only practice.
"I told them just to share the ball with each other and enjoy yourselves," he said. "It didn't make any difference who won the game. We just put an emphasis on having fun."
