Boys senior All-Stars put on a showCooley shines in final high school hoops gameThe Montgomery County boys basketball Senior All-Star Game last week highlighted some of the best players in the county putting on an exhibition of dunks, no-look passes and flat-out skill. The Green Team beat the White Team, 108-106, in a game that featured the 26 best boys basketball players in the county on March 19 at MC-Rockville. The two teams were divided up to make for a good matchup, so the 2-point margin wasn’t what made the game memorable. Instead, it was individual highlights that stood out, such as Magruder’s Stefan Fields, who scored a game high 27 points for the Green Team, several on thunderous fast-break jams. Listed at 6-feet tall, Fields played much bigger than his size all season as a First-Team All-Gazette forward. ‘‘My family decided to move back; I was really happy,” said Fields, whose family moved to Arizona for his junior year. ‘‘I had a great [senior] year. I couldn’t ask for more.” On the White Team, Springbrook guard C.J. Garner, the Gazette Player of the Year, showcased dazzling ball-handling ability en route to 14 points. For the Green Team, Einstein guard Dennis Bassich hit three 3-pointers. But Bethesda-Chevy Chase guard Austin Cooley’s two dunks for the Green Team were the highlights of the night. with One was a first-half steal and breakaway that led to a spectacular double-pump reverse dunk. ‘‘I actually had one just like that in the regional final [against Tuscarora],” Cooley said. ‘‘I was just having fun.” Late in the game, he made the play of the night, driving in from the wing, hanging in the air and hammering in a dunk over Damascus forward Greg Marshall. Marshall hit a 3-pointer on the next possession to respond, and the White Team cut a large deficit to two late in the game, but Sherwood’s Xavier Yeoman laid in an easy deuce off a Cooley feed to win the game. ‘‘This is all fun,” said Sherwood head coach Dondrell Whitmore, who coached the Green Team. ‘‘Not much pressure to win.”
