Quick Hits: Weekend Picks for Montgomery County
National Philharmonic plays Brahms; Companies put together a 'Play in a Day'
Spring has sprung around the area. Enjoy the weather (and an overload of college basketball), but don't miss out on some fun indoor activities in Montgomery County this weekend. Here's what's happening . . .
A bunch of Brahms: On Saturday night and Sunday afternoon at Strathmore, classical music fans get an eclectic mix of the German master. Maestro Piotr Gajewski will lead the National Philharmonic in "Hungarian Dance No. 5 in G minor," and "Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 73." For "Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 77," Australian-born violinist Adele Anthony will join the ensemble.
A few plays that haven't been written yet: Somewhere between pure improv and full scale theater lies Bethesda's Play in a Day. The festival pits six theater companies against each other. The goal: write and produce a 10-minute play from scratch in only 24 hours. Audiences get to see the results at Imagination Stage's Lerner Theatre Saturday night at 8 p.m.
A pair of lame action movies: "Repo Men" and "The Bounty Hunter" are this weekend's big premieres. Unless you're really up for some gunplay, check out something already in theaters. "Alice in Wonderland" and "Shutter Island" are decent options, and if you haven't seen "Avatar," you might as well wait for the DVD.
A couple of films Al Gore would enjoy: Want to use a few more brain cells at the movies? Head to the gorgeous AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring for The Environmental Film Festival in the Nation's Capital. Two documentaries focus on completely different animals. In "Sweetgrass" (Saturday at 3 p.m.), cowboys guide sheep through the mountains of Montana. In "Turtle: The Incredible Journey" (Sunday at 3 p.m.), audiences get an intimate view of the loggerhead turtle's lifecycle.
