Pedestrian study needs input from Route 450 residents
A discussion on pedestrian safety and accessibility will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in Lanham by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and Kittelson and Associates Inc., a transportation and engineering firm with offices in Baltimore.
Both groups are working on a study with help from grant from the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government's Transportation/Land Use Connections Program to improve pedestrian access around the New Carrollton Metro Station.
The discussion will be held at the West Lanham Hills Recreation Center at 7700 Decatur Road.

Central High School
raises Haiti relief money
Students from Capitol Heights' Central High School presented a check March 12 for more than $2,000 to the American Red Cross to go toward relief for victims of the Jan. 12 Haiti earthquake. Students in teacher Alyss Grear's International Baccalaureate World Art and Craft class created beaded jewelry to sell for $5 to $10 during school lunches with all proceeds going toward Haiti relief.
Between 75 and 80 necklaces were sold, generating $300, said Antoinette Carter, Central's food and nutrition teacher. In addition, students from Central's Air Force Junior ROTC solicited students, friends, teachers and family to donate money.
Their combined efforts raised $2,177 to go to the American Red Cross, Carter said.
Census poster contest
for middle school students
The Prince George's County Complete Count Committee is sponsoring a poster contest for county students to promote the upcoming 2010 Census. The deadline to submit entries is Wednesday.
The contest is open to public, private, parochial or homeschooled students in sixth, seventh or eighth grades who either live in the county or attend school in the county. They are invited to create an essay, poster or PowerPoint presentation about the 2010 Census.
All entries will be displayed at a Prince George's County 2010 Census Open House at Kenmoor Middle School in Landover from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 10. Cash prizes will be given to winners in each grade.

County students graduate
from Frostburg university
Seth Bruin of West Lanham Hills and Emmanuel Johnson of Lanham, both of whom made the fall 2009 semester dean's list, as well as Keisha Lewis of Capitol Heights and Benjamin Tate of Fairmount Heights graduated in December graduated from Frostburg State University with Bachelor of Science degrees.
Bruin's degree is in geography; Johnson's degree is in liberal arts; Lewis' degree is in exercise and sport science; and Tate's degree is in business administration.
More than 360 candidates for degrees graduated at the 135th commencement ceremony.
Other several central county students who made Frostburg's fall 2009 dean's list include Tyrone Bristol of District Heights, Kaiya Duppins of Capitol Heights, Krystal Norris of Mitchellville, Abigail Phelps of Glenn Dale, Ashley Price of Seat Pleasant, Jonathan Williams of Largo and Terrence Woods of Capitol Heights.

Largo school presents play
on body image perceptions
Prince George's Community College presents, "The Most Massive Woman Wins" at 3:30 and 7:30 p.m. today through Sunday in Hallam Theatre in the Queen Anne Fine Arts building at 301 Largo Road in Largo.
On Sunday, the only showing is at 7:30 p.m.
The play focuses on four women of various shapes and sizes who are in the waiting room of a liposuction clinic and explores their perceptions of body image.

Hoop the Loop fundraiser
All Shades of Pink Inc., a Bowie-based nonprofit that assists woman and their families diagnosed with breast cancer with resource referrals, non-medical advice and/or emergency financial assistance during their treatment period, is hosting its second annual Hoop the Loop fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Curves at 7401 Forbes Blvd., Suite B1 in Lanham.
The goal is to raise $5,000 to support the nonprofit's Comfort Blanket Program. Through the program, handmade, crocheted blankets are given to breast cancer patients at Doctors Community Hospital in Lanham after surgery.

free tax preparation
Prince George's Community College's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, which provides free tax preparation to Prince George's County residents with basic income tax returns, including free electronic filing, is available from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays through April 10 in the Center for Advanced Technology at 301 Largo Road in Largo.
Taxpayers who need assistance should bring Social Security cards for themselves and dependents, prior year tax returns, if available, a voided check for direct deposit of refunds and their W2, Social Security statement, 1099s and all other tax documents.

Springdale school seeks vendors for April health fair
Charles H. Flowers High School in Springdale is looking for vendors to participate in its health fair to be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. April 30 at the school, at 10001 Ardwick Ardmore Road.

Lanham hospital
to hold blood drive
Doctors Community Hospital in Lanham, the Greenbelt Lion's Club and the American Red Cross are holding a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today in the DSE room on the fifth floor of the North Building at 8100 Good Luck Road in Lanham.
To participate in the blood drive, donors must be at least 17, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health and not have donated blood within the last 56 days.
Blood donors must present identification, such as a driver's license, blood donor card, or work or school photo ID.
