Prince George's well-represented in March Madness
Twenty-three Prince George's players to participate in NCAA Men's, Women's Basketball Tournaments
The 65-team field for this year's NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament was released Sunday evening, and as usual Prince George's County is well-represented on the tournament rosters.
Here's a rundown on the NCAA tournament participants with county ties:
Midwest Region
Washington, D.C. native Thomas Robinson, who played his junior year of high school at Riverdale Baptist for coach Lou Wilson, is in his freshman season at Kansas. Though he's been a role player, averaging 7.2 minutes per game, Robinson has seen action in 32 of the Jayhawks' 34 games this season, averaging 2.6 points per game and accumulating 16 blocked shots. Kansas has the top seed in the Midwest Region and begins the tournament against Lehigh University.
Greenbelt native Adrian Bowie (Montrose Christian High) is a reserve guard for Maryland, averaging 4.5 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. The Terps get the tournament started against Houston on Friday.
Suitland High graduate Bobby Maze is the third-leading scorer for sixth-seeded Tennessee, averaging 9.6 points per game. The Volunteers open the tournament against San Diego State on Thursday.
DeMatha graduate Austin Freeman, a Mitchellville native, is the leading scorer for third-seeded Georgetown, averaging 16.7 points per game. He's joined by Bowie native Chris Wright (St. John's, D.C.), who is the team's third-leading scorer, averaging 14.8 points and 4.1 assists per game. The Hoyas will take on Ohio University on Thursday.
West Region
Lanham native Arinze Onuaku (Episcopal High, Alexandria, Va.) averages 10.5 points and 5.1 rebounds per game for top-seeded Syracuse. The 6-foot-9 senior forward suffered a quadriceps injury during the Big East Tournament last week, but according to published reports he is expected to play when the Orangemen take on Vermont on Friday.
Bishop McNamara graduate Talib Zanna is a reserve forward for the University of Pittsburgh, the No. 3 seed, which opens against Oakland University on Friday.
East Region
Eleanor Roosevelt graduate Darnell Dodson has played in 31 of 33 games and made seven starts this season for the University of Kentucky. The top-seeded Wildcats begin the tournament on Thursday against East Tennessee State. Dodson is averaging 6.4 points per game and is leading Kentucky in 3-pointers with 46.
District Heights native Rafael DeLeon (Bishop McNamara) is a reserve who has seen action in eight games this season with Temple. The Owls take on Cornell on Friday.
Bowie native Jerai Grant is a junior forward at Clemson University, which will open the tournament Friday against Missouri. Grant is averaging seven points and 4.7 rebounds per game and has made 28 starts in the Tigers' 31 games this season.
Bowie High graduate DeWayne Jackson and Gwynn Park grad Sean Thomas have helped lead Morgan State University to a 27-9 record this season. The Bears begin the tournament against second-seeded West Virginia. Jackson is Morgan State's third-leading scorer, averaging 10.1 points per game, along with 4.3 rebounds. He also has hit 44 percent from 3-point range (54 for 123). Thomas is averaging 4.7 points per game and leads the team in assists with 112, an average of 3.1 per game.
South Region
Upper Marlboro native Nolan Smith is averaging 17.4 points per game for top-seeded Duke. Smith played one season at Riverdale Baptist and then finished his high school career at national prep powerhouse Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va.
Duke will open the tournament on Friday against the winner of the play-in game between Winthrop and Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Winthrop's roster includes Landover native Matt Morgan, a 6-9 sophomore center who averages 9.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.
DeMatha graduate Naji Hibbert is a freshman guard at Texas A&M. The fifth-seeded Aggies face Utah State on Friday. Hibbert averages 13.5 minutes per game and has seen action in all 32 of the team's games this season.
Senior guard Corey Allmond, a Gwynn Park High graduate, is the second-leading scorer for Sam Houston State. The Bearkats went 25-7 and won the Southland Conference Tournament championship. Allmond averages 15.9 points per game and leads the team with 94 3-pointers.
Largo High grad Maurice Sutton is a reserve forward/center for second-seeded Villanova. He's played in 24 of the Wildcats' 31 games, making seven starts and averaging 10.1 minutes per game. Despite his limited playing time, the 6-11 Sutton leads the team with 21 blocked shots.
Six from county in women's tournament
Six players from Prince George's County are listed on rosters of the 64 teams participating in the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament. The pairings were announced Monday night. Here's a rundown of the county's participants:
Dayton Region
Bishop McNamara graduate Paulisha Kellum is a redshirt junior guard at Virginia, where she has played in all 30 of the team's games and has made five starts. She's averaging 5.8 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. Virginia is the No. 5 seed in the region and will take on Wisconsin-Green Bay on Sunday.
Nickia Gibbs, an Eleanor Roosevelt High graduate, is a reserve guard at St Francis (Pa.) University, which will face second-seeded Ohio State on Sunday. Gibbs has seen action in 29 of the team's 31 games and has made two starts, averaging 3.4 points and two rebounds per game. St. Francis earned a No. 15 seed in the NCAA Tournament after winning the Northeast Conference championship.
Elizabeth Seton graduate Danielle Brinkley is on the roster at Temple, the No. 8 seed, which will take on James Madison University on Sunday. Gwynn Park grad Brittany Crowell is a sophomore reserve for James Madison.
Memphis Region
Eleanor Roosevelt graduate Olivia Applewhite is a freshman backup forward with eighth-seeded Dayton, which opens the tournament Saturday against Texas Christian. Applewhite, who was part of four Class 4A state championship teams at Roosevelt, has appeared in 27 of Dayton's 31 games this season, averaging 3.4 points and 3.1 rebounds per game.
Suitland native Monica McNutt is the second-leading scorer for fifth-seeded Georgetown. The Holy Cross High graduate averages 11.4 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. Georgetown will meet Marist in the first round on Saturday.
