PGCC women invited to national tournament
Owls will play starting Wednesday in 12-team national junior college event
The Prince George's Community College women's basketball team lost in the semifinals of its conference tournament nearly a month ago and has played just two games since then. But the Owls now have one more tournament to play this season.
PGCC has accepted an invitation to play in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II National Tournament in Peoria, Ill. The Owls will depart for the 12-team event on Monday and will begin play at 8 p.m. Wednesday against Patrick Henry Community College of Martinsville, Va.
The PGCC-Patrick Henry matchup is one of four first-round games scheduled for Wednesday. The winners will advance to quarterfinal games against the top-four teams: Kirkwood Community College of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Schoolcraft College of Livonia, Mich., Kankakee Community College of Kankakee, Ill., and Johnson County Community College of Overland Park, Kan.
With a win Wednesday, the Owls will face Johnson County at 8:30 p.m. Thursday. The semifinals are set for Friday with the championship game at 8 p.m. Saturday.
PGCC played host to the Maryland Junior College Conference Tournament Feb. 18-21. The Owls held the No. 2 seed, but dropped a 74-68 decision in the semifinals against Allegany College of Cumberland on Feb. 20. The Owls stand at 18-7 after splitting two games last weekend in the NJCAA Division II Region 20 Women's Basketball Championships. They beat Allegany College, 73-64, on March 6 and lost to Baltimore City Community College, 77-69, on March 7.
Among PGCC's top players this season are DuVal High School graduate Lillian Ike, the team's leading rebounder (eight per game), and Largo High grad Brittany Hollins, who averages 13 points, three assists and three steals per game.
