CoStar Group of Bethesda named Craig F. Gomez chief human resources officer. Previously, Gomez worked for General Electric, GE Capital, PepsiCo and Cisco Systems.

Discovery Education of Silver Spring named Kelly Denson director of science, technology, engineering and math programs and strategic initiatives, and Clint Perez vice president of marketing. Previously, Denson worked for Educational Testing Service, Boston University, State University of New York Empire State College and the Dalton School. Perez worked for Best Buy, Insignia, Apple Computer, KPMG Consulting and Discovery Communications.

P. Allen Haney, president of JZA Affinity, the nonprofit and association division of Riggs, Counselman, Michaels & Downes of Bethesda, was named the 2010 Association Vendor of the Year by Association Trends for his "commitment to advising the association community on insurance, risk management and benefit programs as well as member programs."

Coventry Health Care of Bethesda named Joseph R. Swedish a director. Swedish is president and CEO of Trinity Health. Previously, he was president and CEO of Centura Health and also worked for Hospital Corporation of America.

Catapult Technology of Bethesda named Gregg Melanson director of government-wide acquisition contracts programs. Previously, Melanson was general manager, global opportunity engagement for Sprint and also worked for C-Technologies.net and the Walt Disney Co.

Sodexo of Gaithersburg named Patricia S. Bellinger to its North America Advisory Board. Bellinger is chairwoman of Nordic Windpower and previously worked for BP plc and Bristol-Myers Squibb.

Mid-Atlantic Financial Partners of Bethesda named Ali Mahmood a senior commercial loan officer. Previously, Mahmood was a vice president at Chevy Chase Bank and EagleBank, and an assistant vice president at BB&T.

Dennis R. Wraase, former CEO and chairman of Pepco Holdings, was named the first executive-in-residence at the Center for Social Value Creation at the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business in College Park.

The Medical Mutual Liability Insurance Society of Maryland in Hunt Valley promoted Jeffrey M. Poole to president and CEO, succeeding David L. Murray, who retired. Previously, Poole was executive vice president and COO.

Previously, Drake was an environmental scientist with the Smithsonian Institution and a visiting professor at the Université Paris Sud in France, the University of Vienna (Austria), the College of Marine Studies University of Delaware, George Washington University and American University.

Shale Stiller returned to DLA Piper of Baltimore as a partner. Previously, Stiller was president, CEO and chairman of the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation.

The Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative named Scott White to complete the term of former director Francis E. Hewitt, who resigned in December. White, a Navy veteran, is a systems engineer at the Naval Air Systems Command.

Whiteford, Taylor & Preston of Baltimore named Robert D. Kalinoski to the firm. Previously, Kalinoski was in-house counsel to Allegheny International and PHH and also owned his own firm.

AirPatrol Corp. of Columbia named Brian Nugent a director. Nugent is president and CEO of Applied Identity. Earlier, he was senior vice president of sales and field operations for Teros and also worked for Atrica, LuxN, Cisco and 3Com.
