Mulch for a cause
The Springbrook High School Athletic Boosters Club will be holding their annual Mulch n More fundraising sale 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 27 at White Oak Middle School, 12201 New Hampshire Ave. in Silver Spring. They are accepting pre-sale orders for bags of mulch, topsoil, and LeafGro (a soil conditioner and enhancer) at $4.25, $3.25, and $3.75, respectively, for delivery that day.
Customers can save $0.25 per bag if they choose to pick up their guaranteed order. Takoma Park residents Flynn Knight Collins and Rosa Schware Trembour and Silver Spring residents Amanda Jane DeLand, Rachel Elizabeth Fary, Catherine Louise Flessas, Daniel Armstrong Green, Monica R. Liddi and Tomiko R. Mason were named to the fall semester Dean's List at St. Mary's College in St. Mary's City. Dean's list honors are awarded to full-time students at SMCM who earn a semester grade-point average of 3.5 or better on 12 or more graded credits.
Lakewood pitches in for Haiti relief
Lakewood Elementary School in Rockville held two fundraisers for earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.
In January, students collected shoes for Soles for Souls, an organization that donates shoes to the needy. A month later, they collected more than $1,000 for Mercy Corps as part of their Hearts for Haiti fundraising drive.
Silver Spring teacher receives state gifted education honor
Susan Michal, a special programs teacher and coordinator for media production at Forest Knolls Elementary School, has been awarded the "Teacher as Leader in Gifted Education" by the Maryland State Advisory Council on Gifted and Talented Education. Michal is one of five Montgomery County teachersand 25 from around the statehonored at a reception in Annapolis Feb. 24.
On March 2, the Forest Knolls PTA and school community, along with Principal Donald Masline, held a recognition event for Michal in her media center.
Falcon 5K set for April 24
at Good Counsel
The Falcon 5K Run/Kids Fun Run will be held at 8:30 a.m. April 24 at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Olney.
Cost for runners and walkers is $25 for adults or $15 for 18 years of age or younger if registered by April 6. Registration after April 6 is $30 for adults or $20 for 18 or younger.

College funding seminar
set for March 11
A college funding seminar will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Sherwood High School in Sandy Spring.
The event, hosted by Ivan M. Nalibotsky, a financial advisor specializing in educational and financial aid strategy, will cover ways parents and students can prepare to pay for college.
Topics of discussion will include tax savings, money barrowing, college affordability and attaining scholarship money.
Used car sale coming to DHS
The Montgomery County Students Automotive Trades Foundation Inc. will hold a used car sale from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Damascus High School, 25921 Ridge Road. The event is being rescheduled because of inclement weather.
All used vehicles are Maryland inspected and most come with a 30-day, 1,000-miles warranty. Vehicle sale prices start at $1,600. A $100 deposit (check or cash) is required for each vehicle purchased: tax, tags and fees are in addition to the price.
A lottery for the used cars will begin at 11 a.m. All proceeds from the sale will be returned to the program.

to offer information, tours
Sandy Spring Friends School will hold an information session and tour of classes and campus at 9:30 a.m. March 31.

Reading volunteers needed
The Ruth Rales Comcast Kids Reading Network is seeking volunteers to tutor second grade students in reading at public elementary schools in Montgomery County.
Volunteers will work with the same student for one hour each week. Training and materials are provided.

Apply for Superintendent's Leadership Program
Applications are now being accepted for the Superintendent's Leadership Program, a yearlong honors career and leadership program targeting in the humanities.
Students accepted to the program will participate in an honors internship, seminars, group service activities and meetings with local leaders. They will receive two honors credits for participation.

Kindergarten orientation
to begin at county schools
Kindergarten orientation will take place April 7 through May 28 for children who will be entering kindergarten in the 20102011 school year.
Children who will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1 can enroll in kindergarten.
Children who will turn 5 between Sept. 2 and Oct. 15 are eligible for consideration for the early entrance to kindergarten process. Parents who seek early entrance consideration for their children should ask about it at their home schools.
Parents who are not certain which elementary school serves their area should call the Boundaries Office at 240-314-4710 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. weekdays. Parents can also access the School Assignment Locator on the Montgomery County Public Schools Web site.
