Silver Spring residents Cindy Scharf (left) holds hands with Olivia Pickett (right) as they are married at the Universalist Memorial Church in Washington, D.C. Tuesday, the first day for legal marriages in the District. Rev. Liz Lerner Maclay of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Silver Spring ministered 10 ceremonies Tuesday, each set 30 minutes apart. Scharf and Pickett are both members of the Silver Spring congregation. The marriages are recognized in Maryland following the state attorney general's decision last week to recognize gay marriages performed in other jurisdictions.
