Celebrate St. Patrick's Day at Hyattstown Mill
The Hyattstown Mill Arts Project will celebrate the approach of St. Patrick's Day on Saturday with a potluck dinner and an evening of poetry.
Everyone is invited to take friends or food or both to the event, which will begin at 7 p.m.
While there, view the watercolors of artist Irene Kelly, which will be on display in the mill gallery through April 30. The gallery is also open from noon to 4 p.m. weekends.
The Hyattstown Mill Arts Project is a membership-based nonprofit cultural arts organization based in the historic Hyattstown mill. It is dedicated to preserving the cultural and historical heritage of the region.
The mill is located at14920 Hyattstown Mill Road in Little Bennett Regional Park.

Fill Empty Bowls at luncheon
The third annual Empty Bowls luncheon will be held Sunday at the Damascus Community Recreation Center to benefit Damascus Help, a nonprofit emergency assistance organization.
Along with a simple lunch of homemade soup and bread, participants will receive empty bowls made and donated by local potters and ceramic students as a reminder of world hunger. Volunteers are needed to make and serve soups and bread and to help set up and clean up the event.
Bread-makers would also be appreciated. Student Service Learning hours can be earned.

The Empty Bowls luncheon will be held from noon to 3 p.m. The recreation center is located at 25520 Oak Drive.
Mulch for sale
-The Damascus High School Athletics Boosters Club is taking orders for mulch.
Mulch will be on sale outside the school cafeteria from 8 a.m.to 3 p.m. Saturday or can be ordered in advance through the club on the school Web site.
Orders of 10 bags or more will be delivered free of charge.
-Boy Scout troops 445 and 1397 will hold their annual mulch sale March 19-21 at Damascus American Legion Post 171, 10201 Lewis Drive.
A 3-cubic-foot bag of shredded hardwood mulch will cost $4. To order, call 301-414-2326.
Individuals, organizations to be honored for serving youths
The Montgomery County Commission on Children and Youth will honor five people and organizations for role they play in the lives of the county's youth.
The commission, in conjunction with The Gazette and Adventure Theatre, will host the 23rd annual Nancy Dworkin Outstanding Service to Youth Award Ceremony on March 24. The program will begin at 7 p.m. at Adventure Theatre in Glen Echo Park.
The 2010 award recipients are: Judge Katherine D. Savage, child advocate; Manna Food Center, organization; Officer Joseph Lowery, service provider; Robyn Holstein-Glass, director of Project Change, volunteer; and Carla Romero, youth.
The Nancy Dworkin Outstanding Service to Youth Awards recognize individuals and organizations whose dedication, vision and service to children and youth have made a difference in the lives of others.
The award is named in memory of the past chair of the commission, who passed away in 1987. She was the director of the Center for Unique Learners, a Rockville school for children with learning disabilities. The program was established to encourage the community to emulate Dworkin's teaching philosophy of encouraging all students to develop skills and reach their own potential, the organization reported.
On campus
-Paula Sosin has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at the University of Delaware. Sosin, a junior majoring in visual communications, is a graduate of Damascus High School. She is the daughter of Marc and Bonnie Sosin of Boyds.
Used car sale
coming to DHS
The Montgomery County Students Automotive Trades Foundation Inc. used car sale has been rescheduled 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Damascus High School, 25921 Ridge Road.
It was originally held in February during the weeks of inclement weather.
All used vehicles are Maryland inspected and most come with a 30-day, 1,000-miles warranty. Vehicle prices start at $1,600. A $100 deposit (check or cash) is required for each vehicle purchased. Tax, tags and fees are in addition to the price of the vehicle.
A lottery for the used cars will begin at 11 a.m. All proceeds from the sale are returned directly to the student training program.

Kite festival returning
to Clarksburg
Clarksburg is preparing to celebrate the end of a long winter with the second annual Kites over Clarksburg Festival on March 27.
The festival will include kite demonstrations, hands-on kite-making activities and children's crafts.
Whether an expert or novice kite flyer, everyone is welcome to join the family event sponsored by Clarksburg Foundation Inc., the Clarksburg Civic Association and the Montgomery County Department of Parks
Everyone is asked to bring nonperishable food items that will be donated to area food banks and participants will receive a raffle ticket for each donation of a canned food item. Prizes from local businesses will be drawn during the festival.
Kites over Clarksburg is free. The festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ovid Hazen Wells Recreation Park, 12001 Skylark Drive in Clarksburg. Free parking will be available by the soccer and ball fields.
Church supper planned
Wesley Grove United Methodist Church, 23640 Woodfield Road, will hold its annual spring all-you-can-eat Turkey and Oyster Dinner on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.
Cost is $14 for adults and $6.50 for children ages 5-12 (younger children eat free). A bake sale and carryout meals will also be available. Cost for carryouts is also $14.
Tax help available
at senior center
Low- and moderate-income residents may receive free tax help at the Damascus Senior Center.
Trained volunteers will be available at the Damascus Senior Center, 9701 Main St., on Mondays and Fridays until April to offer assistance by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, call 240-777-6995.
The program is sponsored by the IRS, AARP, Montgomery County and the Damascus Senior Center.
