A 43-year-old man was struck and killed by a car Thursday night as he crossed Route 355 just south of Middlebrook Road in Germantown, according to county police.

His identity will be released once his family members have been notified.

At 9:36 p.m., 5th District Montgomery County Police responded to Route 355 between Middlebrook and Blunt roads after receiving a report that a pedestrian had been struck, said Jeannette Wright, a county police spokeswoman. Police are investigating the crash.

A preliminary investigation has shown that the man was crossing the highway and headed east, according to a police statement. He crossed the southbound lanes, but was struck by a 2007 Toyota Camry as he attempted to cross the northbound lanes.

The man was not in a crosswalk when he was struck, according to the statement. The driver of the Toyota remained at the scene. The victim was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead from his injuries, police said.

Witnesses are asked to contact the county police Collision Reconstruction Unit at 301-840-2435.
