Firefighters quickly put out Chillum apartment fire
Blaze displaces 14; none injured
A fire in a Chillum-area apartment was quickly extinguished by Prince George's and Montgomery county firefighters on Friday.
The fire at the Canonbury Square Apartments at 5901 Knollbrook Drive began at about 8:15 p.m. in a second-floor apartment and spread to the building's attic, Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department spokesman Mark Brady said.
Firefighters put the fire out in 15 minutes but the 14 people living in the building's eight apartments have been displaced, Brady said. No one was injured and the fire caused about $100,000 in damage.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, Brady said. Residents of four of the apartments may be able to return home today, while apartment management will place residents of the four other apartments into vacant units in the complex.
