First Saturday is going Green'
March's First Saturday will encourage visitors to "go green" from 59 p.m. Saturday in downtown Frederick.
Artist Colin Smallwood, will invite visitors to watch as he turns recyclable trash to art inside the lobby of BB&T Bank, 1 N. Market St. The first 200 visitors will receive a reusable canvas shopping bag. Kids can also enjoy learning a new way to reuse paper for art by making Magazine Bead Bracelets at Dancing Bear Toys, 12 N. Market St.
The Frederick County Recycling program will be on hand at the Candy Kitchen, 52 N. Market St., answering questions about the county's new recycling program. At Firestone's Market, 109 N. Market St., guests can pick up tips on cooking healthier with the Frederick Church of Christ. Parents and kids can join the Frederick County Service Learning Advisory Board at Brewers Alley, 124 N. Market St., to learn how to construct a zero- waste lunchbox.
Elyse Phillips, Frederick County Bay-Wise Master Gardener, will set up at Simply Beautiful Boutique, 145 N. Market St., to provide information for healthier gardens and landscapes using sustainable practices. At 7 p.m., contestants will compete in Downtown Frederick's first ever TRASHion Show held at Velvet Lounge, 201-203 N. Market St. Recycled fashions will be modeled by designers competing for great prizes.
The Frederick Giving Project will host a seed planting station in front of 33 E. Patrick St., while The Friends of Frederick County will promote their upcoming film series on sustainability at the Grapevine, 117 E. Patrick St.
Kids can recycle broken crayons at Everedy Square's I Made This! Pottery Studio, 10B N. East St., and go home with their own Crazy Crayon creation. Habitat for Humanity will show guests how to transform old paint cans into flower pots and other reusable household tricks at Flight of Fancy in Everedy Square, 20 N. East St.
Cell phone recycling stations will be available at The National Museum of Civil War Medicine, 48 E. Patrick St., and The Visitors Center, 19 E, Church St. Two clothing drive boxes will also be available at Aspire Women's Clothing Boutique, 10 N. East St., and Molly's Meanderings, 17 N. Market St., benefiting The Frederick Rescue Mission, clothing homeless men and women in Frederick County.
