Ruff Riders win tournament

The Maryland Ruff Riders U-13 boys' basketball team won the Legends Winter Classic last weekend in Newport News, Va. The Ruff Riders earned a 69-56 victory against the LBA Blue Devils in the championship game. The team includes Christian Green, Maurice Gentry, Travis Arnold, Brady Arnold, Karon Green, Doyin Fadojutimi, Alfonso Divers, Travon Johnson, Anthony Pelt, Isaiah Pelt and Jarell Moore.
Assault wins league title
The D.C. Assault U-8 boys' basketball team capped an unbeaten season and won the championship in the Metro Sixers Winter League, beating the Bethesda Blazers, 23-4, in the title game.
Bethesda led 4-2 at the end of the first quarter, but the Assault held the Blazers scoreless the rest of the way. The Assault forced 18 turnovers in the game. Mekhi Price led the way with eight points and four assists. Zion Harmon added seven points and six steals.
The team reached the title game with a 24-5 win against the Classics White in the semifinals. The Assault had 19 steals in the semifinal and outrebounded Classics White, 17-6. Harmon had 12 points, four assists and three steals. Price added eight points and four steals and Delonnie Hunt had four points and four steals. The team also includes Chase Beasley, Julius Ellerbe, Marcus Gorham, Wesley Peterson, Justin Bryson, Darius Miles and Mike Forbes and coaches Craig Brooks and Melissa Richmond.
Grace Brethren completes three-peat
The Grace Brethren Christian School Middle School boys' basketball team captured its third consecutive Potomac Valley Athletic Conference championship last week, beating Covenant Life, 76-30, in the league title game.
Grace Brethren reached the championship game with a 73-11 win against Field School in the quarterfinals and a 47-29 win against St. Anselm's in the semifinals. With the playoff wins, the Eagles wrapped up the season with a 21-3 record and a perfect 14-0 mark in the PVAC. During its three-season championship run under coaches Cathy Grimes-Miller, Dewayne Bydume and Joe King, the team is 56-5 and 42-0 in league play.
Among the team's top players this season were Jordan Crockett, Jordan Hunter, Wynn Miller and Kai Wilkinson. The team also included Jared Bourke, Zane Grey, Randy McCain, Isaac McClure, Emil Neugent, Carlton Jones and Theo Stewart.
