Downtown Silver Spring additions ideal for those with a sweet tooth
CakeLove changes location; FroZenYo moves in
Downtown Silver Spring just got a little bit sweeter.
The bakery CakeLove will be moving from its Ellsworth Drive location to Fenton Street, and the frozen yogurt chain, FroZenYo, is slated to take its place.
CakeLove had been in a small space next to Lebanese Taverna Cafe on Ellsworth Drive. It will be moving just a block away into the former Fractured Prune Donut Shoppe spot on the corner of Ellsworth and Fenton Street.
CakeLove founder Warren Brown said the move was mainly motivated by location and the need for a larger space. The new space is around 1,400 square feet, or approximately 100 square feet larger than its former location. Brown also thought the Fenton Street space was more ideal with its proximity to the Regal Majestic 20 theater and Veterans Plaza.
"We are psyched," Brown said. "It's an awesome store and an awesome location for us."
Brown said he expects to open the new location in early March. The Ellsworth Drive bakery officially closed Feb. 19. It is working on clearing the old Fractured Prune equipment, Brown said. Then, it is just a matter of painting, decorating and moving in baking equipment. Brown plans to put in tables and chairs as well as sofas for customers to use. The new location will have about twice the amount of space for customers to sit.
CakeLove, which has six locations in Maryland, D.C. and Virginia, opened in Downtown Silver Spring in January 2006.
"It's a very strong store," Brown said. "We are very, very happy about the reception we have had from the Silver Spring community for all the different things we do."
Jennifer Nettles, property manager of Downtown Silver Spring, said FroZenYo is starting demolition on their space next week and will open shortly after.
"We don't offer any kind of yogurt anywhere else, so it's been something missing from the tenant mix," she said. "It's a nice location and a small location. It works well for a frozen yogurt place."
