Leggett hit by alleged drunken driver Sunday night
Recuperating from minor injuries at home after car he was riding in was struck Sunday
Leggett (D), his wife Catherine and his security officer and driver, Samantha Horwitz, were headed to his home in Burtonsville around 10:20 p.m. when the driver of a Ford pickup truck hit the county SUV at the intersection of routes 29 and 198, spokesman Patrick K. Lacefield said.
All three were taken by Howard County fire and rescue officials to nearby Laurel Regional Hospital for examination, said Lt. Paul Starks of the Montgomery County Police Department.
Leggett had complained of neck and back pain, but test results were negative for serious injury. Horwitz suffered an injured knee in the accident. All three were released about 1:30 a.m. Monday.
The driver of the truck, Kendall S. Smith, 47, of Wheaton was arrested on the scene and transported to the Silver Spring police station for processing, Starks said.
Smith failed to stop at a red light and hit the county Chevrolet Suburban on the front passenger side, police said.
He failed two sobriety tests at the scene and refused a third test because of a previous injury, according to county police. It was unclear at this time whether a Breathalyzer test was administered after processing.
Smith was charged with three charges relating to driving under the influence of alcohol and for failure to stop at a red signal, police said. After he was processed, Smith was taken home by a county police officer.
