Plan approved to guide West Hyattsville Metro station development Wednesday, March 1, 2006 E-Mail This Article | Print This Story by Willie A. Givens Staff Writer The Prince George’s County Council Tuesday unanimously approved the Transit Development Overlay Zone (TDOZ) for the property surrounding the West Hyattsville Metro Station.
The TDOZ provides the standard for new zoning and other development design for the area
The county’s park and planning staff has spent several years developing the plan with community input and the goals of transit-oriented development in mind, a release from County Councilman’s Will Campos office said.
Campos, whose district includes the West Hyattsville Metro station, hailed the plan as one embracing many of the positive aspects that could derive from fostering transit oriented development.
‘‘This is a solid plan that will allow an environmentally friendly development to occur based around a major transportation hub,” he said.
Campos amended the plan to include a large community center and strengthened its language to foster the incorporation of low impact development standards.
‘‘With the proximity of this development to a branch of the Anacostia River, it is important to ensure that we minimize the impact on the environment, especially with regard to the water quality of the storm water runoff,” Campos said.
