Georgetown Prep’s Brady Fox begins his quest for first place in the 500-yard freestyle at Saturday’s Metros meet in Germantown. The freshman won the event, helping the Hoyas win their third straight (fourth in five years) boys title.

Indoor swimming pools are usually stuffy. But the air at the Germantown Indoor Swim Center was extra dense Saturday evening as the more than 50 area teams and their fans piled in for the Washington Metropolitan Area Swimming and Diving Championships. And after more than three hours of competition and constant cheering, the Good Counsel girls and Georgetown Prep boys solidified themselves this year’s No. 1 teams. The Falcons cruised to their 11th consecutive Metros title with a 425-327 advantage over second-place O’Connell and the Little Hoyas successfully extended their Metros winning streak to three straight (four in five years), finishing with 390 points, ahead of No. 2 Gonzaga (322) and No. 3 DeMatha (292). The Richard Montgomery girls (310) equaled last year’s third-place finish, followed by Holton-Arms (264) and Walter Johnson (235). The Whitman boys ended the season on a high note, finishing fourth with 256 points. Good Counsel (229) rounded out the top five.

‘‘We never doubted [we’d be able to defend our title],” said Prep junior Josh Hafkin, who set meet records en route to winning the 50-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke. ‘‘We knew the entire year this was our meet. We’ve been waiting since [we beat DeMatha by 0.5 points] last year. We wanted to make sure everyone knew we’re the best.”

Junior Robert Grimmett-Norris, sophomore Andrew Relihan and freshman Brady Fox were other big scorers for the Little Hoyas. Grimmett-Norris won the 200 freestyle and placed second in the 500 freestyle. Relihan took fifth in the 200 individual medley and Fox won the 500 freestyle and finished second behind Hafkin in the 100 backstroke. Seniors Adam Meyer and Josh Klotz, sophomore Mark Meyer and junior Matthew Cooper racked up big points for Whitman. Adam Meyer won the 200 individual medley and placed second in the 100 breaststroke. Mark Meyer picked up second in the 100 butterfly, Klotz tallied second-place finishes in the 50 and 100 freestyle and Cooper won the diving competition.

‘‘That was just phenomenal,” Whitman coach Geoff Schaeffer said. ‘‘It was the finishing touches on a good season that became great by the end. I can’t be more proud.”

Freshmen Zack Wepasnick and Kevin Vallario helped Good Counsel into fifth place. Wepasnick picked up 10 points in the 200 individual medley and Vallario racked up top-five finishes in the 50 and 100 freestyle. Walter Johnson junior Joe Knecht won the 100 butterfly. Junior Haywood Miller placed fourth in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke for BCC. Sophomore Brock Park won the 100 freestyle to help Landon into 18th place.

Liz Kemp, Megan Waters, Kelli Kyle and Colleen Haase were big winners for the Falcons. The four teamed together to set a meet record in the 200 medley relay. Kemp also set a record in the 50 freestyle and won the 100 butterfly, Waters placed second in the 50 freestyle and won the 100 freestyle, Kyle set a meet record in the 100 backstroke and Haase set a Metros record in the 100 breaststroke. Richard Montgomery nabbed third place behind solid performances from Katura Harvey, Susan Kim, Eileen Shi and Caitrin O’Brien. Harvey finished second in the 200 and 500 freestyle events, O’Brien placed third in the 200 individual medley, Kim came in second in the 100 breaststroke and Shi picked up top 10 finishes in the 100 and 200 freestyles. Dana McCreary helped Holton into fourth with top 10 finishes in the 50 and 100 freestyles and Emily Kelly picked up sixth place in the 100 butterfly. Elena Spak and Samantha Hatfield each picked up a top 10 finish for Walter Johnson and Sherwood’s Heather Denman finished third in the 100 butterfly and set a meet record en route to a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke. BCC star Delghi Urubshurow finished third in the 100 backstroke, receiving automatic All-American honors.

‘‘Pretty much we went into this meet really confident,” Good Counsel’s Morgan Webb said. ‘‘We knew O’Connell would be close. But everyone just swam their butts of and really did amazing. It’s really, really exciting. [Eleven straight wins] is just insane.”
