Roosevelt wrestler captures region title
Fagbuyi wins 119-pound title at Saturday's 4A/3A South Region tournament
One of those wrestlers will represent the county as a regional champion. Eleanor Roosevelt High School's Tayo Fagbuyi won the 119-pound weight class, beating Leonardtown's Sam Corey, 6-0, at the regional tournament Saturday night at Chopticon High School in Morganza, Md.
"I just can't believe it because I didn't think anyone from Prince George's County was going to win a regional championship," Fagbuyi said. "At the beginning of the season I didn't think I could do this. I just didn't feel like this could happen."
For most of the evening on Saturday, it looked as if Prince George's County might not have a regional champion. The county sent five wrestlers to the finals, but came up empty before Fagbuyi's match.
Charles H. Flowers' Isaiah Shelton (285) lost a 5-2 decision to Leonardtown's Mark Bohanan. High Point's Chibuzo Obi (215) was pinned by Huntingtown's Alex Ingagliato. Bowie's Caleb Jackson (171) lost a 2-1 decision to Chopticon's Alec Pence. Parkdale's Sam Yirenki (135), a three-time Prince George's County champion, lost a 3-0 decision to LaPlata's Daniel Brannon.
"I know I have to step up my wrestling at states because the last two weeks I have lost in the finals," said Shelton, who will be making his second consecutive trip to the state tournament. "I know I have to get better because the competition is better. I just got to keep working hard and listening to my coaches."
Bowie and Roosevelt will both send three wrestlers to the state tournament, while DuVal, Parkdale, Flowers and Suitland will all send two. High Point will send one wrestler, as the top four in each weight class at the regional tournament earned berths in the state event.
