Forestville High School senior Ekundayo Sogbesan accounted for more than half of the county's victories at the Class 2A/1A Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex on Monday.
Sogbesan set a new state Class 1A record in the girls' 300 meters, as her time of 40.67 seconds beat the former mark of 40.91 seconds that had stood since 2006.
Sogbesan followed with an easy victory in the 500 meters. She won both the 300 and 500 by about 3 seconds each. And she wasn't done. Sogbesan won the 800 and helped the Knights to a second-place finish in the 1,600 relay.
Determined to succeed, Sogbesan did not let the inclement weather that hit the area hard in the past few weeks derail her training efforts.
"[On Sunday], I looked at the heat sheets and felt that I could do really well," Sogbesan said.
Knights' coach Austin Gibbs has had a quiet confidence in Sogbesan all season.
"I would not have put her in the races if I didn't think she could win," Gibbs said. "I told her that if the 800 was close that she was going to win because she is just faster than the rest of the girls."
Meanwhile, the county's other two victories on Monday came from Frederick Douglass seniors Delainey Price and Gloria Roberts.
Price won the first state championship of her career when she took the girls' Class 2A 500. She was all smiles for the rest of the night.
"I feel great and it's just been wonderful for me today," Price said.
Roberts, meanwhile, medaled in each of her three races. She displayed her range as a runner as she won the Class 2A 800 title, then took second in the 1,600 run and third in the 3,200.
The senior said she found ways to train despite the heavy snow, which canceled school and practices for more than a week this month.
"The treadmill has been my best friend for the past two weeks," Roberts said.
On the boys' side, the day didn't go as well for the county, which was shut out of the winner's circle. The county's best finish of the day came from Fairmont Heights sophomore Perryison Henry, who finished second in the Class 1A shot put, and Yaw Adeji of Fairmont Heights, who took second in the 300. Andrew Boseman of Gwynn Park took second in the Class 2A 300 meters.
