Scrap Kendale project

Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006

In an unprecedented report, the county inspector general has confirmed what the Seven Locks community has been saying for the past two years — that the Kendale school project was ill-conceived by Montgomery County Public Schools. MCPS misled everyone about cost, and MCPS misled everyone about community support.

It is time to put the final stake in the money-sucking vampire of a project that is the Kendale school. The County Council should deny the extra appropriation and support Councilman Howard Denis’ amendment to the Capital Improvements Program.

Forgotten in all the wrangling is the whole purpose of the increase in capacity — alleviating the problems at Potomac Elementary. Once the Kendale project is scrapped, we can all focus our attention on solving that problem efficiently, either by enlarging the current Seven Locks or renovating Potomac itself.

The Gazette deserves kudos from the community as the paper has comprehensively covered this issue for the entire two years.
