Local restaurant delivers Super' order to midshipmen
Despite record snowfall that paralyzed many parts of the state, hungry Naval Academy midshipmen in Annapolis managed to still have 3,000 pizzas delivered just in time for the Super Bowl on Feb. 7.
The Lanham Vocelli's was one of seven Maryland franchise stores that helped to make 3,000, 14-inch pizzas 1,500 cheese and 1,500 pepperoni, for as many midshipmen. The Pittsburgh-based Vocelli's was selected by the midshipmen, who participated in a taste test and selected the pizzeria, said Deborah Goode, a Naval Academy spokeswoman.
Franchises in Bayridge, Westminster, Ellicott City, Cockeysville, Lanham, Bowie and Edgewater filled the order, Goode said.
Daniel Foster, 24, who owns the Lanham Vocelli's franchise, said that despite the nearly 30 inches of snow that fell Feb. 5 and 6, the 500 pizzas his franchise made were all delivered on time.
"The delivery happened. We delivered all 3,000 pizzas hot," he said.
Foster said that the night before the Super Bowl, he stayed at a hotel near the Lanham store, and by 3:30 a.m. he was in the kitchen of the Lanham pizzeria slapping dough.
Foster said he made dough for 500 pizzas he estimates that he slapped pizza dough for about 100 pizzas per hour. Five U-Haul trucks were filled with the pizzas, which were then wrapped in blankets to keep them warm.
