Wayne Horace Smithey, 88, of St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of Bethesda, died of complications of colon cancer Feb. 6, 2011 in Gaithersburg.
Born July 8, 1922 in Ogalala, Neb., he was the son of the late George W. and Esther Smithey.
He was the husband of Dorothy E. (Rhodes) Smithey for 66 years.
Mr. Smithey served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1944 to 1946. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, and North China.
He graduated from Kearney State College in 1944 and earned a Juris doctorate from the American University Law School in 1949. He worked on the legal staff of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, then joined the Washington staff of Ford Motor Company as a legislative representative and as vice president until he retired in 1987.
Mr. Smithey served on the Business and Government Relations Council and was a member of the Bryce Harlow Foundation, the Washington D.C. Bar Association, the Jefferson Group, the Association of Senior Professionals at Eckerd College and the Wesley Seminary Board.
He was a member of Chevy Chase United Methodist Church from 1945 to 1958 and then Concord-St. Andrew's United Methodist Church from 1958 until his death. He served on the Asbury Methodist Village Board from 1990 to 1996.
Survivors in addition to his wife include three daughters, Sharon S. Coale and husband, Bill, of Potomac, Deborah S. Durham and husband, Hal, of Silver Spring and Janice S. McElroy and husband, Richard, of Coronado, Calif.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Saturday at Concord-St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, Bethesda.
