Open Forum: Learn more about proposed gas compressor stationKathryn Ruud, Middletown More than 350 Middletown Valley residents showed up Feb. 6 at a meeting to protest the siting of a proposed gas compressor to be built by Dominion Transmission. The site is located on a prominent hillside looking out over the valley. The structure will cover 11 acres, and eventually five 14,000-horsepower turbines will be built there. They will run day and night, transporting liquid natural gas through underground pipes from Pennsylvania into Virginia. There is no clear benefit to Maryland that Dominion. Residents expressed objections because of issues of noise pollution, light pollution, air pollution, potential water pollution, and negative visual impact. Dangers from fire, the possibility of leaks, and possible damage from severe weather were discussed. This is not just a problem for Middletown, it should be a concern for all environmentally conscious residents in Frederick County.
