Mulch sales to benefit high school booster clubs

Area high schools will conduct mulch sales throughout the spring.

Montgomery Blair’s athletic boosters’ mulch sale will be held March 14 through March 30. The club will sell 3-cubic-foot bags. Delivery within a five-mile radius is $4 a bag; outside the area is $4.25. Orders before March 5 will be $3.75.

Albert Einstein’s athletic boosters’ mulch sale will be held 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 17 at the school, 11135 Newport Mill Road, Kensington. The club will sell 2-cubic-foot bags. Pickup orders are $3.50 a bag; delivery within a five-mile radius is $4. Orders must be placed by March 10 to Albert Einstein Booster Club, 1112 Woodside Parkway, Silver Spring MD 20910.

James Hubert Blake’s booster club mulch sale will be held 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 17 at the school, 300 Norwood Road, Silver Spring. Cost is $3.75 a bag. The Springbrook High School Athletic Booster Club will hold its annual mulch sale 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 31 at White Oak Middle School, 12201 New Hampshire Ave. Mulch should be preordered online at by March 16. Bags are priced at $3.75 each, and home delivery within the Northeast Consortium is available on orders of 10 or more bags at a cost of $4 per bag. Takoma Park MS seeks books, videos, CDs, DVDs

The Takoma Park Middle School PTA is looking for used books, videos, CDs, and DVDs to sell during its March Madness Books and Basketball event March 9. All books are welcome, except out-of-date travel guides and old textbooks. All CDs, DVDs and videos are welcome, as long as they’re not too risqué.

Donations are welcome at the school before and after hours until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. They can be left on the stage of the cafeteria. The school is located at 7611 Piney Branch Road in Takoma Park. Call 301-650-6444.

Thornton Friends plansfor spring party, auction

Parents and past parents at Thornton Friends School recently gathered to plan the school’s spring party and auction, ‘‘Spring into the Future” May 5. The event will include refreshments, music, arts displays and a silent and live auction including dinners, vacation homes and artwork. Proceeds will support the arts programs at the school, located on New Hampshire Avenue in Silver Spring.

Workshops on HSAs

A series of workshops for parents about the Maryland High School Assessments (HSAs) will begin today. The workshops will provide information about the state-mandated tests, according to a news release from Montgomery County Public Schools.

Beginning with the Class of 2009, a student must pass the Maryland HSA for English 10; algebra 1; biology; and national, state and local government in order to graduate.

The workshops will be held 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in eastern Montgomery County on the following dates:

*Thursday: Montgomery Blair High School, 51 University Blvd. E., Silver Spring.

*March 14: John F. Kennedy High School, 1901 Randolph Road, Silver Spring.
