McDonough to run for Congress in 2012
Baltimore County delegate has served three terms in state legislature
Del. Patrick L. McDonough plans to run for Congress in 2012, he said Wednesday.
McDonough (R-Dist. 7) of Middle River, will run for the seat held by C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Dist. 2) of Cockeysville. McDonough said he will make a formal announcement in May or June, but is organizing his campaign and raising money.
McDonough said he was motivated to represent his primarily moderate and conservative district in Congress based on Ruppersberger's voting record, which McDonough said leans too far to the left. He plans to make his stance against illegal immigration the focus of his campaign, he said.
McDonough served his first term in the state legislature from 1979 to 1983 as a Democrat from Baltimore City. He was elected in 2002, 2006 and 2010 in his current district. He represents parts of Baltimore and Harford counties.
A spokeswoman for Ruppersberger did not respond to a request for comment.
