Firefighters from Frederick and Montgomery counties spent nearly 10 hours on Sunday extinguishing a house fire in Barnesville.
The fire at the two-and-a-half-story wood-frame farm house in the 21000 block of Beallsville Road apparently began near the front porch, where boxes and household items were stacked, around 11:45 a.m., according to Pete Piringer, a spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services. The cause has not been determined, he said.
There were three people in and around the house when the fire started, Piringer said, and a second-floor occupant became aware of the blaze when a smoke alarm went off. The occupants apparently tried to put out the fire with a hose before calling 911, he said.
The fire was heavy and coming out of several first-floor windows when crews arrived, Piringer said. The firefighters left the scene just before 10 p.m., he said.
The house was a total loss, Piringer said, and the fire caused about $250,000 in damages. No injuries were reported.
