Grand jury indicts Suitland woman on attempted murder charge
Deramous accused of trying to cut out homeless woman's unborn baby
Prince George's County State's Attorney Glenn F. Ivey announced Thursday a grand jury has indicted a Suitland woman accused of kidnapping a pregnant homeless woman and attempting to cut out her unborn child.
Veronica Delores Deramous, 40, of the 3500 block of Silver Park Drive has been charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, false imprisonment and reckless endangerment.
If convicted of all charges, Deramous faces a maximum sentence of life in prison, according to a statement from Ivey's office.
Deramous' attorney, public defender Michael McGraw, could not immediately be reached for comment.
Public defender Lisa Robinson, who represented Deramous at a Jan. 7 hearing, also could not be reached for comment. Robinson unsuccessfully requested a Prince George's County District Court judge drop the attempted murder charge against her client at that hearing.
Deramous is accused of luring Teka Adams, 29 who was pregnant at the time and staying at a Washington, D.C., homeless shelter back to her apartment under the premise of giving her baby clothes sometime around Dec. 1.
Once inside, Deramous is accused of binding Adams with duct tape with the assistance of Deramous' 17-year-old son, Derek Scott Quinn, according to charging documents. Quinn has not been charged in the matter to date.
On Dec. 5, Deramous allegedly gagged the victim and began cutting into her abdomen purportedly so she could take the baby but stopped when Adams began to moan in pain, according to charging documents.
Sometime the following morning, Adams freed herself and ran from the apartment to alert neighbors she needed help, according to charging documents. Deramous allegedly fled the scene once she realized police were en route.
Later on Dec. 6, Deramous called the police District 4 station from an unknown location in Arlington County, Va., at which time police convinced her to stay where she was. She was arrested shortly after.
A police officer involved in the investigation testified at the Jan. 7 hearing Deramous told police she had paid the victim $5,000 for the baby, although the statement was not included in any charging documents.
Police brought Adams to a local hospital where she successfully delivered a baby girl, named Miracle Sky. Adams has not been available for comment.
