Rescue crews pull boy from snowy ravine in Upper Marlboro
16-year-old recovering from hypothermia, exhaustion
A teenage boy pulled by rescue workers from the 100-foot-deep snowy ravine he fell down Monday night in Upper Marlboro is recovering, fire officials said.
The 16-year-old boy, who lives in Upper Marlboro, fell down the ravine around 6 p.m. and remained there calling for help for about two hours before a neighbor heard his calls and alerted the fire department, said Mark Brady, spokesman for the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department. The boy was able to climb up about 60 feet and wait in the top of a tree for help.
At the ravine, located in a wooded area behind 13210 Marlton Center Drive, rescue workers lowered a firefighter in a safety harness to the boy and were able to lift the boy to the top sometime after 9 p.m. Crews took him to a local hospital to be checked out for possible injuries from the fall and hypothermia.
As of Wednesday, Brady said the boy was recovering from hypothermia and exhaustion, although he was unsure whether the boy as still at the hospital or at home. He said the boy did not seem to have suffered any other injuries.
Brady said investigators do not know why he was at the ravine, although several witnesses said it is common for neighborhood children to play there.
