Pancakes, bingo on tap in Brunswick

Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006

In the midst of a relatively mild winter, we get some really cold and windy reminders of what it can be, don't we?

And the snow hasn't really gone away. It visits now and then just to let us know that it can come in quantity. The city's public works teams, which always keep our streets clear when we get a big storm, are catching up on their sleep. Let's hope they have a very tranquil February and March, right?

Plans and preparations for 2006 were hinted at in the last Buzz. That column was put together when most of our movers and shakers were away, relaxing during the after-Christmas lull in activity. But, they were doing their homework, it seems.

The volunteer team for Brunswick Main Street has plans for a monthly series of activities called First Fridays. Each will center on a different theme, with the first scheduled for April 7. The themes? Well, they're planning to surprise us, or maybe they're still doing their homework.

Recreation coordinator Geri Reynolds (301-834-7500, ext. 3) is looking for musical acts to perform on each of the First Friday occasions. Geri would also like to find similar talent to lead off the Movies In The Park series.

That entertainment series is to resume on Saturdays when we're confident that summer's really coming in. So be sure to encourage your local garage band to get in touch with Geri — after all, even the Beach Boys started in a garage.

As to specific dates on the February calendar, here are a few. This Saturday, a youth dance is planned at City Park Building. WTRI's Buddy Rizer is to be onstage as the DJ. It's an early occasion in the spirit of the Valentine's Day tradition.

On Feb. 18, the Ambulance Company Auxiliary will serve one of their usual great pancake breakfasts from 7 to 11 a.m. Just make your way to Company 19's headquarters on West Potomac Street and bring your appetite. Well, it's also a fund-raiser, so bring a little cash, too. But you can bet on lots of good food for a small investment.

Basket bingo at the Eagles' Club is on the calendar for Feb. 26. This is to benefit the Leechel L. Reynolds Memorial Fund that has done so much for needy kids and families in our community. Doors open at noon with the games to begin at 2 p.m.

Looking ahead for the first robin of springtime? OK, we don't have a sighting to report, yet, but the basic boating course series for 2006 will kick off March 20. Geri Reynolds is also handling registrations for that. Just give her a call to sign up and you'll have taken your first step to help make our waterways safer.

Until then, we'll just have to be satisfied with the seed catalogs in our junk mail for thoughts of spring.
