Marlboro cheer teams take first at state championships
The Marlboro Boys and Girls Club's four competitive cheer teams took first place in their respective divisions at the Maryland State Cheer and Dance Championships.
The Power (Advance Senior Division), Fierce (Advance Junior Division), Force (Advance Peewee Division) and Energy (Intermediate Peewee Division) won first-place trophies, a state championship banner, state championship jackets for each cheerleader, and the teams earned bids to the Battle at the Capitol National Championship, March 5-7 at National Harbor in Oxon Hill.
Marlboro was awarded the Team Spirit Award, given to only one team per competition for good sportsmanship, manners and attitude. Marlboro will compete again Sunday at Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro in the Maryland Cup.
Panthers honor top participants
The 301 Panthers Youth Organization recently recognized its top football players and cheerleaders for the 2009 season. Honorees included:
Tiny Mites: MVP Offense: Melvin Jones; MVP Defense: Emmanuel Biddy: Most Improved: Brendan West.
Mitey Mites: Malik Alexander, Satchel McKinney, Delante Massey, Isaiah Johnson, Jaden Jordan, Anthony Allen.
Peewees: MVP Defense: Darius Johnson; MVP Offense: Sean Gray; Most Improved: Deon Horton and Antoine Day.
Junior Midgets: MVP Offense: Brendan Hicks; Most Improved: Taylor Hazel; MVP Defense: Shavunta Harris and Jeremiah Wright.
Cheerleaders: MVP: Autumn Savoy, India Clark, and JaLynn Biddy.
The Maryland Lakers Youth Basketball Organization is looking for boys ages 11 and 12 for AAU/YBOA play. Tryouts are under way. League and tournament play is in the Washington, D.C. metro area with some travel beyond the area in the future. Call Kenny at 301-556-3117.
