We have a surplus?'
What? We have a surplus? I checked the dictionary to make sure I understand the meaning of the word. According to the dictionary, it means anything (in this case money) over and above what is needed or used. According to the Jan. 13 edition ["Baker plans to use surplus funds to woo federal agency to Prince George's"], Prince George's County has a $116 surplus. And how is our newly installed county executive planning on using some of it? To "woo" Health and Human Services from Montgomery County to our county.
Please, please, please, enough already. The County Council has seen fit to give itself a raise while hundreds are either out of work or doing the work of those who were laid off in addition to their own. They haven't seen a COLA, let alone a raise in years. The same council has just seen fit to have their retreat in another county with the explanation from Councilwoman [Ingrid] Turner that they wouldn't be able to "bond" in the county in which they are paid.
Let me put one question to both Mr. [Rushern] Baker and the council: Why in the world should any entity come to Prince George's County when our own council doesn't do business here?
Mr. Baker and members of the council, I will be happy to suggest at least a dozen Prince George's County entities, starting with our school system, which could better use whatever amount you plan on throwing to HHS.
Please, let's keep our surplus in our county.
