Athlete of the Decade
Jerod Void, Surrattsville, Class of 2001: A two-time Runner of the Year in outdoor track, Void also earned 2001 Runner of the Year for indoor track. He was a double triple-crown winner, taking county, region and state championships in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles in 2000 and 2001. Void nearly had a triple-triple, but finished second in the 100-meter dash at the Class 2A outdoor state championships in 2001. Void established a county-record time of 13.95 seconds in the 100 hurdles during his senior outdoor season, and he won three consecutive state indoor titles in the 55 hurdles (1999-2001), an event in which he holds the state Class 2A record (7.48 seconds).
Boys and Girls Track Coach of the Decade
Larry Colbert, Eleanor Roosevelt: The longtime Raiders' coach led Roosevelt's program to new heights after taking over in 1990. Colbert's resume speaks for itself. In 15 years at the Greenbelt school, Colbert helped lead the Raiders boys' and girls' teams to a combined 20 indoor and outdoor state championships. Along the way, Colbert also took 16 teams to the Championship of America finals at the Penn Relays. In the past decade, his girls' teams won four state 4A indoor titles, while his boys' teams were two-time state indoor champs.
All-Decade Boys' Track Team
Deyon Williams, Suitland, Class of 2003: One of the best all-around athletes in county history, Williams was a multiple first-team selection and won county and region championships in the high jump and long jump. Was 2002 state outdoor champion in the 300 hurdles.
Leif Crago, Bowie, Class of 2003: Two-time state runner-up in the shot put. Holds the county indoor record for shot put with a throw of 58 feet, 0.25 inches. No other thrower from the county has had a throw of that length in the past decade.
Dominic Berger, DeMatha, Class of 2004: One of the best hurdlers in state history and the Outdoor Runner of the Year in 2004. A winner of multiple WCAC championships in the 110 and 300 hurdles.
Herbert Nicholls, Gwynn Park, Class of 2002: The Outdoor Runner of the Year in 2002, when he won county, region and state titles in the 200 and 400. Nicholls set a 3A state meet record in the 400 (47.48 seconds) and helped Gwynn Park win state titles in the 400 and 800 relays.
Isaac Matthews, Oxon Hill, Class of 2003: Was the 2003 state indoor champion in the 800 meters. At one time, held the county record in the 800 and won multiple county championships.
George Empty, Flowers, Class of 2009: Outdoor Runner of the Year in 2009. Winner of the state 400 and 800 meters in his senior season in 2009.
Terrill McCombs, Roosevelt, Class of 2006: The Outdoor Runner of the Year in 2006, McCombs completed a triple crown in the 200 and 400 and became the first runner of the decade to win the 100, 200 and 400 at the county championships.
Serge McGill, Suitland, Class of 2004: The 2003 Outdoor Runner of the Year won five individual state titles in the 55, 200 and 400 dashes, taking the 200 and 400 outdoor state 4A titles in both 2003 and 2004.
Afolabi Aromire, Flowers, Class of 2005: Indoor Runner of the Year in 2005. Holds the Class 4A state mark in the 300 meters (34.66 seconds) and holds the overall state record for the 500 (1 minute, 3.52 seconds). Two-time state indoor champion in 300.
Larrone Moore, Northwestern, Class of 2005: The fastest prep runner in the state in 2004 and 2005, Moore won the county, region and state titles in the 100 in both years. He also won the long jump title at the Penn Relays in 2005 (23 feet, 4.25 inches).
Romaine McKay, Roosevelt, Class of 2005: Three-time first-team selection, McKay was the 2005 outdoor state champion in the 400 and 800. McKay is also a former county record holder in the 1,600 and was Runner of the Year in 2005.
Mikias Geleagle, Roosevelt, Class of 2006: Runner of the Year for the 2006 indoor season, Geleagle won the 2006 state indoor championship in the 3,200 and was a five-time first-team selection for indoor and outdoor track.
Kelli Thibou, Roosevelt, Class of 2007: One of the most versatile runners in county history, Thibou is the winner of state indoor titles in the 500 and 800. Winner of the 2007 state outdoor championship in the 800, he holds the county record in the event (1:51.98).
Leslie Murray, High Point, Class of 2008: Winner of multiple county, region and state titles in the long jump and high jump. Murray claimed the 2008 state championships in the 300 hurdles and 400 dash and had a triple crown in the 300 hurdles.
