Berliner launches re-election campaign
Montgomery County Councilman Roger Berliner (D-Dist. 1) launched his re-election campaign Monday and announced "The Berliner Bandwagon" a long list of elected officials and community leaders supporting the councilman.
He is seeking his second four-year term.
Berliner's supporters include U.S. Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin (D), Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler (D), Comptroller Peter V.R. Franchot, Sen. Robert J. Garagiola (D-Dist. 15) of Germantown, Sen. Richard S. Madeleno Jr. (D-Dist. 18) of Kensington and other current and former elected officials.
Berliner also is supported the three mayors of municipalities in District 1: Kathy Strom (Chevy Chase); Chris Keller (Garrett Park); and Jeffrey Slavin (Somerset).
"Over the past three years, he has done an excellent job of representing the people of Bethesda, Chevy Chase, and Potomac, and I'm happy to lend my support to him in his bid to continue representing the Marylanders of the 1st Councilman's district," Cardin said of Berliner in a press release.
Berliner said he was glad to have the support of community leaders from his district.
"We have serious issues confronting our county budget issues and fundamental questions about how and where we will grow as a community," Berliner said. "I approach those issues as someone with a demonstrated track record of being a fiscal conservative' committed to protecting our wonderful residential neighborhoods.
Ilaya Hopkins, 41, announced this month that she formed an exploratory committee, called Friends of Ilaya Rome Hopkins, to consider a run at the Democratic nomination.
