Leadership group swears in its new officers
The Gaithersburg/Germantown Jaycees installed its 2010 Board of Directors this month.
The officers are: Community Development Vice-President: Kara Farrell of Germantown; Individual Development Vice-President: Valerie Lefor of Gaithersburg; State Director: Vicente Lopez of Silver Spring; Treasurer: Dean Lefor of Gaithersburg; Secretary: Valerie Palmer of Montgomery Village; Chairman of the Board: Jason Silverberg of Gaithersburg.
The organization also presented its 2009 year-end awards. The awards presented were:
- Rookie of the Year: Valerie Lefor.
-Jaycee of the Year: Philip Pezzano of Montgomery Village.
-Associate Jaycee of the Year: Blair Learn of Germantown.
-Board Member of the Year: Katie Skinker of Germantown.
-Management Project of the Year: Germantown Oktoberfest Souvenir Booth, chaired by Valerie Lefor.
-Community Project of the Year: Seneca Valley After Prom, co-chaired by Lydia Stockton and Meghan Ryan of Germantown.
-Membership Project of the Year: Membership Bonfire, chaired by Andrew Field of Rockville.
-Individual Development Project of the Year: Self-defense seminar, chaired by Kara Farrell of Germantown.
-Project of the Year: Paint-a-Pumpkin, chaired by Kara Farrell and Stephanie Rago of Germantown.
-Helping Hands of 2009: Jeff Snyder of Damascus; Angela Jandrew of Gaithersburg; Melissa Unger of Derwood; and Lindsay Silverberg of Gaithersburg.

Cheer on with Bar T on Sunday
Bar-T Kids of Germantown will hold its 10th Annual Half Time Show cheerleading and pom competition Sunday at Lakewood Elementary School, 2534 Lindley Terrace, Rockville.
Sixteen teams will compete: Belmont Cheerleading, Clopper Mill Cheerleading, College Gardens, Diamond Cheerleading, Germantown Cheerleading, Goshen Step, Lakewood Poms, McNair Poms, Mill Creek Cheerleading, Rachel Carson Cheerleading & Poms, Ritchie Park Cheerleading, Rosemont Cheerleading, Sequoyah Cheerleading, Stedwick Step, Watkins Mill Poms and Woodfield Poms.
The competition will begin at 1:30 with an awards ceremony to follow. The event is open to the public and admission is free.

Campus Congratulations
-Leslie Haymon, a 2006 graduate of Northwest High School and Dana Haymon, a 2008 Northwest graduate, were both named to the President's Honor Roll for achieving a 4.0 GPA for the Fall semester at the University of Oklahoma. Leslie has completed her undergraduate degree, majoring in Political Science and intends to attend law school in the fall. Leslie achieved an overall 3.94 GPA. Dana is a junior majoring in mathematics, with an overall 3.91 GPA.
-Ashley Elizabeth McCasland of Germantown was named to the honor roll at Mars Hill College in North Carolina.
-The following students were named to the fall dean's list at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania:
Elise M. Terrell, daughter of Jonathan and Carla Terrell of Poolesville, and a 2007 graduate of Poolesville High School; Emily C. Terrell, daughter of Jonathan and Carla Terrell of Poolesville, and a 2006 graduate of Poolesville High School; and Jennifer M. Welch, daughter of John and Shirley Welch of Gaithersburg, and a 2007 graduate of Northwest High School.
Lights and cheer
Poolesville has announced the winners of its annual Holiday Lighting Contest.
Winners in the homeowners category were Chris and Sherri Hall; Nancy Cillay; Joe and Ellen Onderko; John and Lori Sullivan; Byron and Diane Mezick; and John and Charlotte Roberts. The business winner was The Shops at Jo's.
Kudos and Grattis
Kevin Ohashi, son of Nancy J. Cooke of Bethesda and Ken Ohashi of Darnestown, recently won the Southern Sweden Venture Cup for the best business idea, which connected job searchers with job providers through the use of the social networking site Twitter.
Ohashi, 24, is a graduate student in International Marketing and Brand Management at Lund University, in Sweden. He holds a master's degree from Lund University in entrepreneurship and a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Vermont. Ohashi attended Georgetown Day School and graduated from The Lincoln (American) School in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Venture Cup, a Scandinavian business plan competition started by McKinsey and Company, is Sweden's largest such competition. The juried competition is designed to promote entrepreneurship within Scandinavia as well as to generate high-growth start-up companies.
