Leaves behind a mother and 4-year-old daughter, Sequoia Betts. ‘‘He was crazy, he was a lot of fun,” said his mother Irene Jackson. ‘‘He always kept you laughing.”

Wootnie Jackson worked locally on electrical wiring jobs but was making plans to attend cooking classes to become a chef. ‘‘He loved to cook,” Jackson said of her son. ‘‘He watched cooking shows all the time.”

‘‘He was outgoing. Very, very outgoing,” said his mother, Karen Wright. She and his aunt both explained how much Darnell loved to play basketball. ‘‘He really wanted to be a basketball star,” his mother said. ‘‘He had so much potential there.” She said college coaches had even called her to discuss her son and his talents.

‘‘He was a nice person,” said family friend and neighbor Shaleese Talbert, who used to see Wright at the local recreation center. ‘‘He tried to stay out of trouble.”

Lunsford loved taking her grandchildren shopping or for lunch at McDonald’s. ‘‘She lived for the children,” said Linda Lunsford, her daughter-in-law. Relatives coming through the area always knew they would be invited to stay at Lunsford’s home. In her spare time, she did volunteer work for elderly people.

Walston has a younger brother that looked up to him. The oldest of two boys, Walston loved traveling with his mother to places like Las Vegas and the Caribbean. ‘‘He was very outgoing and well-liked,” said Kim Walston, his mother.

He was planning to move and start a new life in San Francisco where his grandfather lived. He was just accepted into a trade program a week before his death.

Lake Arbor resident Sandy Pruitt remembered ‘‘Coach Chucky” fondly as her son’s basketball coach during a memorial service in May.

‘‘He made every child feel like a star on the team and he believed in team play. You never heard him talking negatively to the kids or not encouraging them to do their best,” Pruitt said.

‘‘He was the only coach I know that made you feel great even when you lost a game.”

She said he would often give money to those who had none to buy food for the week. ‘‘He would give his last,” Moss said. ‘‘If you needed it and he had it, you could get it.”

Affectionately known as ‘‘Bumps” among family and friends. ‘‘He was a good guy,” said neighbor and friend Tori Boyd, who lived in the same apartment complex. ‘‘He was down to earth.

‘‘We went to a basketball game with Donald... at the MCI Center and the Wizards beat Chicago [Bulls]. He was hard on sports, he was a [Chicago] Bulls fan.”

Boyd said he was liked by many and his death was a tragic one.

‘‘I never heard anybody speak bad of him,” Boyd said.

He had attended Bowie State University and started teaching in Montgomery County in 1999. ‘‘Kids absolutely loved him,” Bowie High assistant principal Jay Kenty said shortly after Winfrey’s death. ‘‘I sure would not have any problem with him teaching my children.”

James. ‘‘Our mother never recovered and joined him on Oct. 1. They are together in heaven, and I now have two angels watching over me.”

Troy Williams, operations manager at the Elite Club, said Patrick, whose mother also was a chef, was starting his own catering business. ‘‘He was a good guy to talk with,” Williams said. ‘‘He took pride in his cooking. He planned our entire menu. He was very hardworking.”

Mature beyond her years and the only one in her Chinese family who spoke English well, Zheng was the one the family relied on to handle the finances and pay utility bills. She was fascinated with other cultures and had close to a 4.0 grade point average. ‘‘She put a lot of effort into doing well,” said Lara Lavery, Zheng’s former teacher.

‘‘My brother, he was a sweet guy. He would give you the shirt off his back. Everyone who knew him loved him,” said Delmus Luther, Gaymon’s brother.

‘‘He was a good guy. He didn’t bother nobody. He pretty much stayed to himself,” said Dennis Talley, who knew Gaymon for about eight years. The two used to run into each other every day, usually in the mornings, said Talley, when Gaymon was on his way to pick up breakfast.

‘‘I just miss them because more than likely they’d be around if they were alive today. I just miss them,” Greg Spane said of his high school friends Cerda and Eddy Trujillo, who was shot and killed the same evening as Cerda.

‘‘They were both good people, good fathers,” said friend Wendy Cajchun. ‘‘Whenever you needed something they were there.”

Cerda was a father of two daughters and Trujillo had one daughter.

Family say Tolson, the middle child of 11, was a people person who loved to dance and tell jokes. ‘‘She had a happy-go-lucky spirit,” said Denise Ross, Tolson’s stepmother.

Tolson was also the mother of a 6-month-old son. She was studying nursing at Montgomery College and working at Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream. ‘‘Her trademark was her unique fashion style,” Ross said.

She recalled him ‘‘holding little teeny babies, rocking them to sleep... . If [his killer] ever knew Ricky, I think Ricky would probably have changed his life.” Karis’ unborn son is due in March.
