Greenbelt resident named finalist in YoungArts competition
Joseph Baker, a Greenbelt resident and Suitland High School student, was selected as a YoungArts finalist in voice, and will be competing in the YoungArts competition in Miami, Fla., on Jan. 11-16.
Of the more than 4,000 applicants in the visual, literary and performing arts, Baker was chosen along with 8 other Maryland students. A total of 143 of the 4,000 were nominated as finalists.
Winners of the YoungArts competition in mid-January will be invited to New York in the spring for the "In the Studio" series, an additional week of workshops, collaborative performances and exhibitions. Awards range from $1,000 to $10,000, and some student artists also will be presented with the 2010 Presidential Scholars in the Arts award. In addition, those students will be given an opportunity to perform at the Kennedy Center and exhibit at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.
Parkdale High alum completes special Army course
Earl F. Cox, a member of the Army National Guard and 2005 graduate from Parkdale High School in Riverdale, recently completed the fire support specialist advanced individual training course at Fort Sill in Lawton, Okla.
Cox learned how to establish and operate radio and wire communications and speech security equipment, such as encoding and decoding messages. He is the son of Shari L. Mills and Earl F. Cox of Landover Hills.
College Park plans MLK festivities
The City of College Park will host its 19th annual tribute to the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.
The tribute, titled "A Testament of Hope," will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Poet and author Barbara Talley will serve as master of ceremonies. The event will feature performances by groups including the Maryland Boy Choir, College Park Youth Choir, SGI-USA New Century Chorus, Metropolitan Washington Baha'i Chorale, Friends Community School in College Park and student band Three Chords and the Truth.
"It's a really good day of celebration and people in the community coming together," said College Park Mayor Andrew Fellows. "I've been going for over a decade, and it never fails to inspire me."

College Park resident makes dean's list at York College
Matthew Hobbs of College Park was named to the fall 2009 dean's list at York College of Pennsylvania.
Hobbs, a senior majoring in business administration, received the honor by attempting at least 12 credit hours and earning a semester grade-point average of 3.5 or greater.
Hobbs is a 2006 graduate of St. John's College High School in Washington, D.C.
York College is a private college in south-central Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1787 and has about 4,600 undergraduate students.
