Resurgent Surrattsville boys take down Gwynn Park
The Surrattsville High School boys' basketball team continued to shake up the status quo in the County 3A/2A/1A League on Friday with a 57-44 win against Gwynn Park.
For the Yellow Jackets, the loss snapped a six-game losing streak and dropped them to 7-2. Surrattsville, which won just one game last season, improved to 6-2.
The game ended an up-and-down week for the Hornets. It started Tuesday with Surrattsville earning a 68-50 win against Frederick Douglass, last year's Class 2A state runner-up. The Eagles were playing without leading scorer Timmone Whatley, who averages 20.8 points per game. He missed the contest as he recovered from surgery to remove his wisdom teeth.
Surrattsville then dropped a 61-55 decision to Forestville on Thursday, as the Knights outscored the Hornets, 25-9, in the fourth quarter. It was Forestville's first win of the season after opening with five consecutive losses.
Friday against Gwynn Park, the Hornets got 14 points and six rebounds from Richard Harris. Raymond Baldwin added 11 points and eight rebounds, and Charles Reid had 10 points. Louis Simpson had nine points, seven rebounds and three steals.
Maryland School for the Deaf 63, Queen Anne 54
The Lions lost the title game of the Oriole Classic in Frederick, but Queen Anne's Larry Haley passed a milestone. The senior scored 24 points, which took him past the 1,000-point mark for his career. With the loss, Queen Anne fell to 8-7 overall.
Girls basketball
Elizabeth Seton 44, Bullis 31
Tyaunna Marshall led the Roadrunners with 16 points as they won their third game in a row. Seton trailed 8-6 at the end of the first quarter, but shut out Bullis 15-0 in the second period to take command of the game. Melanie Royster and Jazmine Missouri each had six points for Seton.
Riverdale Baptist 58, Stonewall Jackson 46
The Crusaders earned their sixth consecutive victory, led by Diana Logan (17 points). Ataira Franklin added 16 points and Lauren Chase had 13 points. The teams played evenly matched first and third quarters, but Riverdale Baptist outscored Stonewall Jackson 16-8 in the second quarter and 20-13 in the fourth quarter.
