Cavaliers capture second place at Antietam Meet
Mezebish wins four events at Monocacy Valley Athletic Antietam Conference meet
Due to construction at her school, South Carroll High's Cody Mezebish doesn't have a track of her own.
So on Friday the Cavaliers' junior took claim of Hagerstown Community College's by winning four events at the Monocacy Valley Athletic League Antietam Conference meet.
"This will definitely help when I have to go up against North Carroll girls [at the Carroll County Meet] and at regionals," Mezebish said. "It pushes me to get more first places."
Individually, Mezebish outpaced the expanded field in both the 55- and 300-meter dashes. After anchoring South Carroll's in a dominating 5.47 second victory in the 4x800 relay, she and her teammates closed out the girls' varsity portion of the competition by cruising to a four and a half second triumph in the 4x400.
"Thankfully it [the meet] went good," Mezebish said.
Occupying the third position of the 4x400 squad, Caity Martin pulled in front of her competitors on the first turn of her leg. A clean exchange to Mezebish and the race was all but won.
"I was just trying to stay with the leader, pass them and give us the lead," Martin said.
South Carroll, the 2008 Antietam champion, failed in its bid to repeat. The Cavs finished second, with 104 points, 31 behind Williamsport. Rachel Sykes captured the girls' 1,600 and 3,200. Nina Boston took second in the 55 hurdles. At just over six seconds behind the Wildcats, South Carroll came in third in the 4x200.
Expansion at South Carroll has displaced its track team. Currently there's a hole in the Cavaliers' track approximately the size of a bus. Twice a week they work out at Century's facility, while every Monday they find themselves in the field behind the school. South Carroll's track is scheduled to reopen later, but head coach Rob Pennington believes it won't be available until March.
"They've responded well," Pennington said. "I can't complain. They're doing really well."
Boonsboro took third with 42 points. Catoctin (40), Smithsburg (38), Brunswick (27) and Clear Spring (16) rounded out the girls' field.
For the fourth consecutive year a Brunswick boys shot putter finished atop the podium. Grant Smith took first place, retaining 2008 Class 1A state champion Ben Horner's crown for the Railroaders. Catoctin's Jake Fields was the runner up.
Cavs' distance whiz Jake Zamostny completed his school's domination in the long-distance events with wins in the 1,600 and 3,200. The Cougars' Ryan Thompson, placed second in the 55 while South Carroll's Ryan Martin took third in the 3,200.
Williamsport completed the sweep with a score of 103.5 in the boys competition ahead of Smithsburg (97), Boonsboro (95), South Carroll (48), Brunswick (33.5), Catoctin (24) and Clear Spring (2).
Railroaders' head coach Lee Zumbach regards this particular meet as the symbolic starting gun of the indoor season.
"We like this meet because it gets us in good condition for the [Frederick] county meet and the regionals," Zumbach said. "It's the first real competitive meet of the season and the kids really get psyched for that first competitive meet."
