Man arrested in Christmas Day killing of 84-year-old Hillcrest Heights woman
First-degree murder charges pending after stabbing
A Washington, D.C., man who had been wanted in the killing of an 84-year-old Hillcrest Heights woman has been found by police and arrested, Prince George's police said Friday.
Elvin Rashid Murphy, 34, of the 2100 block of I Street Southeast was arrested Thursday at his home, and first-degree murder charges in the Dec. 25 death of Lillie Capers are pending his extradition from the District.
According to police, Murphy was visiting his ex-girlfriend Capers' 26-year-old granddaughter, whose name has not been released on Christmas Day at Capers' home in the 4400 block of 23rd Parkway when the two got into an argument, and he allegedly began assaulting her.
"The grandmother tried to step in and intervene when she was stabbed also," Cpl. Henry Tippett, a county police spokesman, said before Murphy's arrest.
Capers died on the scene. Her granddaughter was taken to a hospital but has since been released.
The Metropolitan Police Department collaborated in the arrest, according to police.
No phone number was listed for Capers' residence.
