Middletown edges Walkersville boys basketball, 54-53
Glushakow's late bucket gives Knights' victory over rival Lions
With less than five seconds remaining in Monday evening's contest against visiting Walkersville High, the Middletown senior took an inbounds pass, drove the baseline and dropped in the game-winning layup as the Knights escaped 54-53 for a dramatic Monocacy Valley Athletic League Piedmont Conference victory.
"I knew we didn't have much time left, so I knew I had to go for a layup or put up a shot, and I just felt more comfortable going to the basket," Glushakow said. "
Trailing 53-52 with 37.2 seconds left on the clock, Middletown began to push the ball up the floor. Barely eluding Walkersville's full court pressure, the Knights took possession on the left flank of the 3-point arc after the ball was tipped out of bounds by the Lions. Middletown then promptly called timeout.
Re-emerging from the huddle, the Knights (6-3, 2-1 conference) prepared to execute what they drew up as the game-wining play. Only it didn't go as planned. Taking the ball out of bounds, forward Will Lyons progressed through his options before hitting Glushakow on the baseline.
"It wasn't supposed to go to me," Glushakow said. "It was supposed to go to Chris Pirrone and Walkersville had some great defense [on him] so I had to get open and Will [Lyons] just made a great pass to me."
With four seconds remaining, Walkersville called timeout. The Lions were hoping to up a play for senior standout and New Hampshire commit Scott Morris, who took the inbounds pass, and then sent a sharp pass down court after being pressed by three Middletown defenders. Walkersville got an open look, which rimmed out as the clock expired.
"We got an open look, but it just didn't fall," Walkersville head coach Ryan Burkey said. "Again, you have to give credit to Middletown for that."
Middletown trailed 44-41 at the start of the fourth quarter, and quickly found itself down 50-44 after a pair of Morris 3-pointers to open the session. Stingy on defense and with the ball, the Knights set the stage for a dramatic conclusion after Zack Fontenot hit on a pair of free throws with just over 90 seconds remaining.
Glushakow, who also hauled in six boards, and Kevin Harris led the Knights with 15 points apiece. Pirrone added eight points. Middletown committed only seven turnovers.
Orlando Rosa paced the Lions (4-3, 1-1) with 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Brett Zimmerman tallied 14 points while Morris added 11 points, five boards and two assists.
"You have to give a lot of credit to Middletown," Burkey said. "They came out and in my opinion, they outplayed us."
