From Maplewood to FedEx, simply the best
Marcus Mason (Georgetown Prep '03) is The Gazette's football Player of the Decade
Marcus Mason was the best anyone had ever seen, long before he became the premier running back in Maryland state history.
"I remember him in Pee Wee football, it must have been about 15 years ago," said Clarksburg football coach Larry Hurd, then coaching in the Capital Beltway League. "We were at Alta Vista Park and he played for Maplewood. He took a handoff down the right sidelines and was just gone."
But it is at Georgetown Prep where the first memories were formed. A 5-foot-9 ball of excitement from the moment he stepped on campus, Mason is the only player this decade to make four All-Gazette football teams. By the end of the 2002 season, he had set state records for rushing yards (5,620), touchdowns (86), and points scored (520).
"He did natural things you just can't teach," said Little Hoyas head coach Dan Paro. "And from his very first to his last touchdown, and he scored enough for God's sake, he'd just hand it to the officials. He was always very humble, just really endearing. You just knew great things would happen."
