2011 Healthy Challenge - The Gazette and The Fairfax Times Get Healthy Competition

Finale - June 18th 2-4pm

Over the past six years, The Gazette, through our Healthy Challenge program, has helped 49 individuals collectively reduce their weight by over 1,659 pounds. That’s an average of almost 35 pounds per person. Yes, some have put the weight back on while others, like Thom Hunter, went on to become fitness trainers themselves…or others, like Jen Green, went on to run the Marine Corps Marathon. This year, in addition to having a Montgomery and Prince George’s team, we have added a Fairfax Team with the help of our sister community paper, The Fairfax Times.

In March 2011, we received over 100 applications from readers who had tried nearly every diet and exercise program possible to change their health with little to no success. These frustrated applicants had finally reached the point where they were willing to join a team of strangers and get healthy while one million readers observed. Now that is what I call “ready for a change.”

Now here we are, year seven, having hand-picked 15 more individuals to help them get back on track and regain a healthy lifestyle. This year will be our most challenging because all three teams currently weigh in over 1,100 pounds, yet they all have the “most to gain” by being part of our competition.

The reason our program works is because we take individuals, who cannot do it alone, and put them on a team. That way, they are accountable not just to themselves and their families, but to their team. If that is not enough, they are also accountable to their county. And just for good measure, we put their weekly weigh-in results in hundreds of thousands of our community newspapers.

We are fortunate to have our partner, Medifast, back with us. Again, they have generously donated over a thousand dollars of Medifast meals to each contestant during the program. Last year, Medifast changed the lives of all of our contestants. Our winner, Normand Brunelle, a 62-year-old two-time heart attack survivor from Ft. Washington, Maryland, shed 64 pounds in 12 weeks. That’s more than one pound for every year he has walked this earth.

This year we have a new partner, Leisure Fitness, who not only donated a grand prize – a Precor EFX 5.23 Elliptical Fitness Crosstrainer valued at $2999 – to one of our potential winners as well as a fitness seminar for all our contestants, friends and families with their expert, Dr. Paul, but they also donated this entire website thanks to the wonderful work of their web developer, Dustin Duchene. Leisure Fitness will be kicking off their own home challenge to promote fitness and will be donating a second Precor EFX 5.23 Elliptical Fitness Crosstrainer to a lucky winner. Make sure you click on the tab above for more details.

We also have the support of our good friends from Falls Grove Center for Dentistry who return every year to help sponsor this program.

For 10 weeks, our contestants will work together to get healthy through Medifast, moderate exercise, and teamwork! They will be participating in Jeremy’s Run, a 5K event, on Memorial Day and then in our finale, a public weigh in and fashion show, on June 18th!

So, please put us on your Facebook page and email us to your friends. Track our contestants regularly, sign up for Medifast yourself, enter the Leisure Fitness home challenge contest, and click on the tabs above to learn more about our partners. We hope we inspire you to get healthy.

Here’s to your own healthy challenge.

A Great Ending and New Beginning - Team Fairfax Wins Healthy Challenge

Having led virtually the entire competition, Team Fairfax took the title in the 2011 Healthy Challenge, sponsored by The Gazette and The Times newspapers and Medifast. The team lost 17 pounds in the last four days of the contest to cement the win. From April 7-June 18, red team members dropped 189 pounds or 15.3 percent of their combined body weights.

Aaron Jones of Herndon was the overall individual winner; he, too, had led since the start. Originally selected as an alternate, Aaron was named to the red team just a day before the competition kicked off. When he stepped on the scale Saturday at the finale event hosted by The Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville, Aaron had lost a whopping 55 pounds or 21.5 percent of his weight. Aaron, whose 31.9 BMI at the start of the competition was considered obese, now has a BMI of 25.1, just two-tenths of a point away from normal weight. As the biggest loser, Aaron receives a 4-day/3-night cruise, a 6-month Sport&Health membership, and two additional months of food products and support from Medifast... read entire article

Dumping the Slump & Taking Control

By Karen Finucan Clarkson, Special to the Fairfax Times

In a slump and desperate to change the trajectory of her gradual, yet continuous, weight gain, Carlye Smith contemplated reality television. "I found myself wishing I could go on The Biggest Loser so that I would have no choice but to change everything," says the 29-year-old Herndon resident. "Obviously the chances of going on the show and the chances I'd still have a job when I got back were slim. When I looked at the Healthy Challenge it was about as close as I could get to 'having no choice but to change' and I knew it was what I needed. It arrived in my life at a perfect time."

Down 20 pounds since April 7, Carlye sees a difference. "I went to Lane Bryant this past weekend to buy smaller pants and the clerk at the store remembered me," says Carlye. "She congratulated me on my progress so far."... read entire article

Doing Whatever It Takes

By Karen Finucan Clarkson, Special to the Fairfax Times

Being overweight has cost Cynthia Bolling more than she likes to admit. Poor health, a lack of confidence, and persistent fatigue were a direct result of her obesity. "The price was too high and unacceptable," she says.

Feeling as though she had hit bottom – physically and emotionally – Cynthia threw her name into the pool of potential Healthy Challenge contestants just hours before the deadline. Her "brutally honest" essay, as she refers to it, helped win her a... read entire article

A Woman Transformed

Having lost 33 pounds over the past 10 weeks, Nikki Vonderhaar is more energetic and her face is no longer cherubic. It is that leaner, slightly more angular look that Nadine Matar, a stylist with PR at PARTNERS at Tysons Corner, sought to emphasize with Nikki's makeover at the salon's Oakton location.

Playing off Nikki's natural beauty, Nadine chose a medium brown, temporary hair color. "It will blend easily with her natural highlights," says Nadine. "Its richness will enhance the shine."

The stylist gave Nikki a trim, leaving some layers for movement. "It's a very smooth look," says Nadine.

Weight loss is a family affair in the Vonderhaar household. Both Nikki and her husband Eric, who has dropped 41.5 pounds, have been following the Medifast 5 & 1 plan. For her daily lean and green meal, Nikki favors buffalo. "I am a huge fan of red meat but unfortunately it's not one of the leaner meats. When I learned that Buffalo was as lean as fish, I was all in," she says. "I enjoy it most as a kabob on our charcoal grill with a mesquite smoke accompanied with marinated vegetable kabobs."... read entire article

Great Endings and New Beginning - Team Montgomery Runner Up in Healthy Challenge

Having lost 27 pounds in the last four days of the competition, Team Montgomery made a valiant effort to take top honors in the 2011 Healthy Challenge. Ultimately, the team fell short, coming in second in the 11-week weight-loss contest. Still, the blue team dropped 170.5 pounds or 14.6 percent of its members' combined weight from April 7-June 18.

Team Fairfax took this year's team title and Aaron Jones was the overall individual winner. The red team lost 189 pounds or 15.3 percent, while Aaron was down 55 pounds or 21.5 percent.

The top loser among the nine female contestants was Team Montgomery's Elena Drayer of Germantown, who placed second overall. When she stepped on the scale Saturday at the finale event hosted by The Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville, Elena had dropped 35 pounds or 18.6 percent of her body weight. "The stress from being laid off from work during the beginning of the economic downturn and having to support my family made it difficult for me eat right and exercise. Once I noticed that I was gaining weight, it became harder to lose. Finally, I stopped trying."

After landing a job in the computer industry, Edward's next step was to improve his lifestyle. He applied to become a contestant with the Healthy Challenge. "I wanted to lose weight and hopefully change my eating habits," he says. "I figured that this would motivate me and help me to lose the weight and learn how to keep it off. In It to Win It (Prince George's County)

John P. Chism has a competitive nature, demonstrated by the fact that he now leads the green team, having lost 10.2 percent of his body weight since the Healthy Challenge began on April 7. Earlier this year, John, a zone auditor for the D.C. Department of Transportation's Infrastructure Project Management Administration, performed a 'self-audit' only to find that, after a period of inactivity and unhealthy eating, he was overweight. "I became lazy and paid no attention to my diet. I stopped exercising consistently. I ate comfort foods - a lot of fatty foods and ice cream. I didn't see the need to watch nor did I care about what I was eating, when I was eating it, or how much I ate," John says.

John applied for the Healthy Challenge because, "The phrase itself motivated me when I read about it in The Gazette. I wanted to be challenged and supported by a group of people to get healthy," he says. His local support network includes John's nearly four-year-old daughter Mya, two siblings, and parents.
