2011 Healthy Challenge - The Gazette and The Fairfax Times Get Healthy Competition
Over the past six years, The Gazette, through our Healthy Challenge program, has helped 49 individuals collectively reduce their weight by over 1,659 pounds. That’s an average of almost 35 pounds per person. Yes, some have put the weight back on while others, like Thom Hunter, went on to become fitness trainers themselves…or others, like Jen Green, went on to run the Marine Corps Marathon. This year, in addition to having a Montgomery and Prince George’s team, we have added a Fairfax Team with the help of our sister community paper, The Fairfax Times.
In March 2011, we received over 100 applications from readers who had tried nearly every diet and exercise program possible to change their health with little to no success. These frustrated applicants had finally reached the point where they were willing to join a team of strangers and get healthy while one million readers observed. Now that is what I call “ready for a change.”
Now here we are, year seven, having hand-picked 15 more individuals to help them get back on track and regain a healthy lifestyle. This year will be our most challenging because all three teams currently weigh in over 1,100 pounds, yet they all have the “most to gain” by being part of our competition.
The reason our program works is because we take individuals, who cannot do it alone, and put them on a team. That way, they are accountable not just to themselves and their families, but to their team. If that is not enough, they are also accountable to their county. And just for good measure, we put their weekly weigh-in results in hundreds of thousands of our community newspapers.
We are fortunate to have our partner, Medifast, back with us. Again, they have generously donated over a thousand dollars of Medifast meals to each contestant during the program. Last year, Medifast changed the lives of all of our contestants. Our winner, Normand Brunelle, a 62-year-old two-time heart attack survivor from Ft. Washington, Maryland, shed 64 pounds in 12 weeks. That’s more than one pound for every year he has walked this earth.
This year we have a new partner, Leisure Fitness, who not only donated a grand prize – a Precor EFX 5.23 Elliptical Fitness Crosstrainer valued at $2999 – to one of our potential winners as well as a fitness seminar for all our contestants, friends and families with their expert, Dr. Paul, but they also donated this entire website thanks to the wonderful work of their web developer, Dustin Duchene. Leisure Fitness will be kicking off their own home challenge to promote fitness and will be donating a second Precor EFX 5.23 Elliptical Fitness Crosstrainer to a lucky winner. Make sure you click on the tab above for more details.
We also have the support of our good friends from Falls Grove Center for Dentistry who return every year to help sponsor this program.
For 10 weeks, our contestants will work together to get healthy through Medifast, moderate exercise, and teamwork! They will be participating in Jeremy’s Run, a 5K event, on Memorial Day and then in our finale, a public weigh in and fashion show, on June 18th!
So, please put us on your Facebook page and email us to your friends. Track our contestants regularly, sign up for Medifast yourself, enter the Leisure Fitness home challenge contest, and click on the tabs above to learn more about our partners. We hope we inspire you to get healthy.
Here’s to your own healthy challenge.
