Sports reporter

The Gazette, publisher of award-winning weeklies in the Washington suburbs, is looking for a reporter to cover sports for its community newspapers and companion website.

Sports reporters are expected to cover at least two games each week; write two centerpiece feature stories each week; write at least one news story/advance; write a comprehensive notebook of their beat sport for three counties; handle any breaking news on their beats as it develops. They must have the ability to cultivate sources, write engaging features and meet deadlines.

Candidates should have strong feature writing skills, an ability to work nights and weekends, a mobile phone and transportation. The Gazette has newsrooms in Laurel, Gaithersburg and Frederick.

Arts & Entertainment writer

The Gazette is looking for an Arts & Entertainment writer. The candidate should have a broad interest in all related topics, including music, theater, fine arts, food/dining and film.

The candidate will be required to produce a minimum of five stories weekly spanning A&E coverage areas in Montgomery, Frederick and Prince George’s counties. Writer should be adept at interviewing multiple sources and exhibit exemplary research skills in the interest of creating complete, well-rounded articles. The position may require travel to outlying coverage areas beyond the confines of the office.

The candidate should have an engaging, lively and fun writing style that mirrors the subject matter, a knack for generating original story ideas and an eye for catchy and appealing visuals. The Gazette of Politics and Business is looking for an Annapolis bureau reporter to cover the state legislature and politics. The candidate should have government and political reporting experience, preferably at the state level.

The candidate also should have the skills to produce daily web stories and social media postings, work with other reporters and the editor, and handle enterprise news stories for this paper, for the community and regional news sections of our mid-week Gazettes and for our weekly e-newsletters.

The candidate also should be a go-getter as a reporter who is enterprising about coming up with story ideas, has a track record of breaking news stories and is analytical and thorough enough to write compelling trend stories.
