Trailblazers win silver medal
The Mitchellville Trailblazers 8-and-under boys' basketball team won its first seven games en route to claiming runner-up honors and the silver medal at the AAU National Championships that concluded July 3 in Memphis, Tenn.
The Trailblazers opened pool play with a 28-12 victory against Georgia Southern Exposure, then followed with a 44-11 win against Ozark Gameface Swoosh which represented St. Louis, Miss. In the team's final pool play games, the Trailblazers rallied from a 26-20 deficit with less than 90 seconds remaining in regulation to post a 27-26 victory against the Cincinnati (Ohio) Knights before knocking off the North Carolina Gaters, 34-24.
The Trailblazers thumped Arkansas Triple Threat, 46-3, to begin bracket play to advance the quarterfinals. There, they earned a Final Four berth with a 44-13 victory against the New Orleans Jazz. Cincinnati, the Kansas Players and the Memphis Tarheels also moved into the Final Four.
The Trailblazers defeated Kansas, 31-22, to advance to the national championship, where they faced Cincinnati for the second time in the tournament, this time coming up short, but still earned the No. 2 seed in the nation.
Trailblazers team members included Terrell Allen, Ahmad Clark, Malik Douglas, Joshua Golson, Jabari Greenwood, Nehemiah Mack, Kamrin Moore, Jahaad Proctor, Trey Johnson, Kyle Rawls and Aaron Thompson.
Crusaders take second
The Maryland Lady Crusaders U-12 AAU girls' basketball team earned runner-up honors at the AAU National Championships two weeks ago in Amarillo, Texas.
The Crusaders traveled a tough road to the title contest, winning five straight games in the loser's bracket of the double-elimination tournament before falling to Beyond the Rim of California, 48-43.
Maryland led 18-14 with six minutes to go in the first half before Beyond the Rim came back to take the lead. The Crusaders got within two points with less than seven minutes to play, but could not take the lead.
Maryland, the Potomac Valley Region champion, opened the 80-team tournament by winning its three games in pool play by an average margin of 28 points. That allowed the Crusaders to advance to the bracket phase of the tournament, where they began with a 69-46 victory against the Georgia Pistols and a 61-46 triumph against Indiana's Finest.
A cold shooting performance (12 of 60 from the field) led to a 38-34 loss to the Alabama Twisters, which put the Crusaders in the loser's bracket, where one more loss would have sent the team home. But Maryland rolled to a 69-42 victory against the Missouri Magic and a 50-41 victory against the West Virginia GBA Thunder.
In its third loser's bracket contest, the Crusaders eliminated the defending champion Texas Thunder, erasing an early 8-1 deficit en route to a 54-44 win. That set up a rematch against the Alabama Twisters, and the Crusaders earned revenge for the earlier loss, beating the Twisters, 44-31.
Next up was the loser's bracket final and a meeting with the KGC Pride, who had previously beaten defending champion Texas Thunder. The Crusaders completed their run through the loser's bracket with a 47-32 victory, setting the stage for the title game against Beyond the Rim.
The Maryland Lady Crusaders include Ataira Franklin, Jazzmine Jonson and Michea Bryant, who led the team in scoring. Ashley Miles, Janae Harrison and Sheronne Valis were the club's top rebounders. Lauren Chase, Tiffany Minor and Tiara Greene were the team's assist leaders. Coach Bryan Chase's team earned a large silver trophy that had to be shipped back to Maryland due to its size.
